WINNIPEG – The Fraser Valley Cascades (5-3) took the latter match of their two-game series with the Manitoba Bisons (3-5), winning 76-65 Saturday night at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.
The Cascades dominated in the paint where they outscored the Bisons 40-14 and collected 25 offensive boards to Manitoba's nine.
"It's been an area that we've been bad at all semester," said Manitoba coach Michele Sung. "We know if we mentally take possessions, runs, and quarters off we're going to get killed."
Manitoba kept their sharpshooting from the perimeter going, hitting 10 of 21 three-point attempts after drilling 10 of their 19 attempts last night.
Taylor Randall was money from beyond the arc early on, nailing a trio of three-pointers on her first three attempts. Randall led the game with 15 points at the half, but finished with 17.
"We had good flow at times but defensively we got to stop big players in big games," said Randall postgame.
And that wasn't the case for Manitoba after Fraser Valley scored 27 fourth-quarter points, 12 coming off the hands of Jessica Parker who didn't have a made field goal after the first 30.
"We didn't do a good job in using fast and slow in terms of tempo," said Sung. "When they asked their players to step up, they got that in spurts where we didn't with consistency."
Cacades' all-star forward Taylor Claggett stepped up as well, scoring nine of her 16 points in the final frame. Claggett added nine rebounds and two steals. Teammate Deanna Tuchscherer tied Claggett with a team-high 16 points.
Lauren Bartlett led Manitoba with 19 points, rounding out her evening with six rebounds and four assists. Emma Thompson grabbed eight treys and finished with nine points on two of 10 shooting.
The Bisons are off for all of December and will travel to Edmonton in the new year to take on the MacEwan University Griffins on Jan. 3 at 7 p.m.
