WHKY: Kish, Hubbard lead Cougars past Bisons, 1-0

Amanda Schubert made 16 saves in the Bisons loss.

WINNIPEG - Paige Hubbard's first period goal proved to be all the University of Regina Cougars needed to defeat the University of Manitoba Bisons 1-0 at the Wayne Fleming Arena on Friday night in Winnipeg.

At the tail end of a Regina power play, Hubbard found the twine and later was deemed the game-winning goal scorer for the visitors. Goaltender Jane Kish turned in a 24-save shutout to help the Cougars earn their third win of the season.

"She did a great job for us tonight," said head coach Sarah Hodges, commenting on the play of her goaltender. "As a team we did well limiting second shots and chances from point blank."

The win sees the Cougars jump above the Bisons in the standings, now with a record of 3-6-0-0.

The Bisons' Amanda Schubert was named the third star of the game, turning away 16 of the 17 shots she faced. Manitoba, who are the reigning Canada West silver medalists slip to a record of 2-7-0-0.

It was the visiting Cougars who drew first blood late in the opening period. Moments after a power play had expired for Regina, Hubbard scored her first goal of the season to give her squad a 1-0 lead.  Despite a late power play for the hosts, the Cougars carried their one-goal lead into the first intermission.

Regina carried the play for the majority of the second frame and had two fantastic scoring chances but were unable to increase their one-goal lead.  Just past the midway mark of the period, Manitoba's Schubert denied Regina's Sidney Shyiak on a breakaway. The period concluded with Cougar forward Merissa Zerr's shot going off the post with just a second remaining.

In the third, the visitors played the Bisons to a second consecutive scoreless period to earn 1-0 victory.

The two teams face a quick turnaround and will hit the ice again tomorrow at 2 pm at the Wayne Fleming Arena to close out the weekend series.
