MHKY: Bisons fall to Regina in shootout thriller, 4-3

Adam Henry scored his fifth goal of the season in Saturday's game.

REGINA - Ben Duperreault and Isaac Schacher scored shootout goals for the Cougars to give Regina a 3-2 win over the visiting Manitoba Bisons on Saturday afternoon in a men's hockey game at The Co-operators Centre.

Brandon Holtby made 29 saves and stopped both shots in the shootout to help Regina improve to 2–7-1 on the season, while Riley Lamb made 28 saves for the Bisons who fall to 5-4-1.

Ty Barnstable and Connor Odelein both scored for the Cougars in regulation, while Adam Henry and Josh Tripp replied for Manitoba.

Barnstable opened the scoring up with a shorthanded breakaway goal with 1:16 left in the first period. Bryce Platt crashed into a Manitoba defender, and the puck bounced out to Schacher, who passed it up to Barnstable for a breakaway and his quick wrist shot beat Lamb glove side.

Odelein notched Regina's second goal of the night in the second period with Tyler Kreklewich assisting on the play. The Bisons got on the board with 4:27 left in the second period as Henry scored a 5-on-3 power-play goal. Tripp scored the Bisons' second goal of the night with just under two minutes left in the third period. Ben Dalke had the puck pinned behind the Regina net until it popped out to Dylan Thiessen, who passed it over to Tripp for a wrap-around goal.

Both teams had a plethora of chances in 4-on-4 and 3-on-3 overtime but were not able to capitalize, which set the stage for a shootout.

Duperreault, the first shooter for the Cougars, came in with speed and wristed it passed Lamb's blocker side. Jeremy Leipsic shot first for the Bisons. He tried to go blocker side on Holtby but was denied. Schacher shot second for the Cougars, coming in close to Lamb and faking towards the left side before pulling it to his forehand and burying it into the back of the net past a sprawling Lamb. Henry tried to keep the Bisons alive but was unable to beat Holtby, giving the Cougars a 3-2 victory.

Todd Johnson was proud of his team after the game.

"The guys got rewarded," Johnson said. "They have been working really hard on and off the ice, and this win reflects that."

The Cougars will return to action with a road series at the University of Alberta on Nov. 15 and 16. Manitoba will also be on the road next weekend, this time visiting the University of Saskatchewan.
