WINNIPEG — After winning four gold medals at the 2019 U SPORTS Odlum Brown Swimming Championships, Bison third-year swimmer Kelsey Wog has been named the Canada West Female Third Star of the Week.
It's the second weekly honour for Wog during the 2018-19 season, as she was named the Female First Star of the Week (and U SPORTS Female Athlete of the Week) following her performance in the Canada West Championships in the fall.
This past weekend was Wog's best ever finish at a national championship, winning all four of the events she competed in.
Wog won a personal and program-best four gold medals — coming out on top in the 50-metre (31.80), 100-metre (1:06.84), and 200-metre breastroke (2:25.50) events, as well as the 200-metre individual medley (2:13.98).
The Winnipeg native's time in the 200-metre breaststroke also broke a four-year-old U SPORTS record by over two seconds, as she posted a 2:25.50 and won the event by seven seconds over the nearest competitor.
The performance at nationals completed a season that also saw Wog win four gold medals at the 2018 Canada West Swimming Championships — all three breaststroke events and the 200-metre freestyle.
Wog, a student in the Agricultural and Food Sciences faculty, now holds the Canada West record in the 50-metre and 100-metre breaststroke and the U SPORTS record in the 200-metre breaststroke.
This is the sixth time that a Manitoba athlete has been named as a 2018-19 Canada West weekly honours recipient (Kevin Negus – Third – Oct. 28; Jordyn Zacharias – Second – Nov. 12; Kelsey Wog – First – Nov. 26; Lauryn Keen – First – Dec. 3; Cassie Bujan – Third – Feb. 18).
