MVB: Bisons lose fourth straight as Wesmen rout in three

The loss is Manitoba's fourth straight and their fifth in the last six matches.

WINNIPEG – After a trio of difficult losses, the Manitoba Bisons couldn't muster momentum on Saturday at the Duckworth Centre, as the Winnipeg Wesmen earned a win and a sweep in straight sets (25-20, 25-18, 25-20).

Daniel Thiessen was the star for Winnipeg with 16 kills. Manitoba was led by a dozen kills from fourth-year outside Kevin Negus. Dustin Spiring had seven kills while Zach Janzen had three blocks.

After the match, Bisons coach Garth Pischke talked about how two tough losses to Thompson Rivers and a dramatic five-set loss on home court to the Wesmen on Friday caught up to his team.

"It just seemed that every time there was a close set we were losing it and eventually it just took its toll on us," Pischke said.

"We mentally weren't in the game tonight. Credit to Winnipeg... and they certainly deserved the win, but we didn't challenge them at all."

The loss has serious playoff implications for Manitoba, who are now looking up at Winnipeg for the eighth and final playoff berth in Canada West. The Bisons have two games left against Trinity Western, while the Wesmen have a difficult set of four games against Alberta and UBC.

In the first set, the Wesmen broke it open with an early run of six points — three of those off kills by Adrian Dyck. Manitoba wasn't able to close the gap after as four attack errors after the technical timeout cut the air out of their effort.

In the second, Winnipeg made a run of five after the technical timeout (16-14), as Dyck made two service aces to provide some separation for the home team.

Finally, in the third, an early 3-1 lead for Manitoba was snuffed out quickly. Two attack errors by Ben Carleton contributed to a run of four points by the Wesmen (7-5) which was followed by a six-in-seven stretch midway through the set to seal it.

The Bisons have a conference bye next weekend.
