CALGARY – The Mount Royal University Cougars hosted the University of Manitoba Bisons to a rematch on Kenyon Court on Saturday evening.
The set scores were: 30-18, 17-15, 26-22, and 21-34. The final score was 94-89 for Manitoba.
For Manitoba, Rashawn Browne led the team with 33 points, followed by James Wagner with 16. For Mount Royal, Matthew Guinto led with 23 points, followed by Adam Pahl with 19.
Wagner began the game with a layup within the first 15 seconds. Rashawn Browne followed with a handful of points of his own to take an early lead. Mount Royal quickly found their stride and brought the score to match at 12. The two teams were meeting point for point until Manitoba snuck into the lead. Bisons' Wagner started a streak of points for the team, leading them into a healthy lead by the buzzer.
Manitoba opened the scoring once more for the second but was soon followed by several successful Mount Royal free throws. The Cougars managed to narrow the score gap by the halfway point. However, Manitoba made some tough maneuvers to score several layups and a three pointer to solidify their lead. Mount Royal's Lincoln Anderson stole several points, finishing with a layup in the final minute.
The Cougars made a comeback in the third, Anderson earning the first points of the quarter. Mount Royal's Pahl followed with a series of his own, bringing them closer to narrowing the score. Manitoba was able to take back the court for a few minutes to take their lead further ahead. Despite some pushback from the Cougars, the Bisons were able to run away with the score to finish the quarter with a wide gap.
Manitoba's Risto Zimbakov began the fourth with a free throw followed by a swift layup. Anderson took back the advantage, landing a three pointer, followed by Nate Petrone taking a few points of his own. The teams traded points, not willing to give away the major advantage. Petrone landed several more points to bring Mount Royal closer to closing the gap as Manitoba held steady. The final minute came down to a couple free throws for Manitoba, which earned them their final two points.
Manitoba's next game will be against the Saskatchewan Huskies. Tip-off is 2 p.m. at IGAC on Saturday, January 18.
