MVB: No. 6 Golden Bears finish Bisons in straight sets on home court

Owen Schwartz had six kills, as the Bisons are tied with Mount Royal for the eigth and final conference playoff spot.

EDMONTON – The No. 6 ranked Alberta Golden Bears wasted little time in winning their sixth-straight conference game, cruising to a 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-15) win over the Manitoba Bisons, Saturday night at Saville Community Sports Centre.

Jackson Kennedy and Braedon Friesen led Alberta with 11 kills each, with Max Elgert adding a game-high 31 assists. With six straight wins for Alberta, which includes sweeps over Brandon, MacEwan and now Manitoba, the Bears sit second in Canada West with a 14-4 record.

Owen Schwartz led the Bisons with six kills on Saturday night, as Manitoba drops to 7-11 after a fifth straight loss. After the weekend series in Edmonton, they sit in a tie with the 7-11 Mount Royal Cougars for the 8th and final playoff spot.

Alberta was fantastic at the net on Saturday night, forcing 23 attacking errors from the Bisons, coupled with 17 blocks. Bears middle George Hobern finished with a pair of solo blocks, while also contributing 12 assisted blocks.

Jordan Canham also added seven kills on just 12 attempts in an extremely efficient performance, which saw Alberta finish with a 37% attack efficiency.

After taking the first two sets comfortably, the Bears and Bisons opened the third with some back-and-forth play, before Alberta went on an 11-5 run to close out the match.

Alberta will look to continue their win streak next weekend, as they host the 9-7 Calgary Dinos at Saville.
