CALGARY – Fifth-year forward Coda Gordon led the way for the University of Calgary Dinos as they defeated the Manitoba Bisons 2-1 to sweep their Canada West quarter-final series at the Father David Bauer Arena.
Gordon was the difference in both games for the Dinos, finishing with a two-game total of five points, including both goals on Saturday night.
"We knew they were going to come out hard today," said Gordon. "Now we're looking forward to heading to Saskatchewan for a chance to keep going."
Gordon opened the scoring four minutes into the first frame while shorthanded. The crafty veteran picked off a pass in the middle of the Bisons zone and quickly snapped a shot past the blocker of Manitoba goaltender Riley Lamb.
Despite the shorthanded goal against, the Bisons evened the score on their next man advantage. A shot from the point from Brady Pouteau found its way through traffic and past Dinos goaltender Matthew Greenfield to knot the game at one.
The Bisons had their best chance to take the lead in the second period in the form of an extended five-on-three power play. After the Dinos killed off the man advantage, Gordon picked up his second of the game by batting the puck out of mid-air from the corner of the blue paint.
The action did not pick up again until late in the third with the Manitoba goalie on the bench for the extra attacker. What looked to be an open net and a tying goal with under 20 seconds left on the clock quickly turned into a highlight reel save by Greenfield sliding across to make the save with his right pad. That was as close as the Bisons came as their press for an equalizer fell short.
Greenfield was solid in his return to the net stopping 13 of 14 shots from the Manitoba attack. Lamb was also impressive with 30 saves in the loss.
