MHKY: Golden Bears beat Bisons 8-0 in Edmonton

Despite the loss, a Regina loss secured a playoff spot for the Bisons men, who will go on the road for the quarterfinals next weekend.

EDMONTON – 10 different Bears found the scoresheet on Friday night, as the No. 4 ranked Golden Bears cruised past the Manitoba Bisons with an 8-0 win at Clare Drake Arena.

Grayson Pawlenchuk and Noah Philp each scored twice, with Chad Butcher, Lucas Nickles, Cole Linaker, and Tyler Soy also finding the scoresheet for Alberta. Brendan Burke also made 18 saves to earn his 13th win, and third shutout.

The win is the 22nd this season for the Bears, who maintain their spot atop the CW standings with 44 points. Alberta can clinch the No. 1 seed in Canada West with a win tomorrow night in the regular season finale, or with a Saskatchewan loss to Regina.

With Regina losing on Friday night, Manitoba did clinch a playoff spot, despite falling to 9-14-4 this season. The Bisons currently sit in 6th with 22 points in 27 games.

Alberta took immediate control of the game on Friday night, scoring five goals on 15 shots in the first period. Philp and Butcher opened the scoring six minutes in, scoring 42 seconds apart to give the Bears an early two-goal lead.

Pawlenchuk scored both of his goals late in the first, with a Lucas Nickles tally sandwiched in between. Pawlenchuk's 18 goals are tied for the most in Canada West, while his 34 points are one behind Calgary Dino Matt Alfaro.

Bisons starter Tyler Brown rebounded with a stellar second period, stopping all 13 shots he faced in the frame. Burke wasn't busy, making 11 saves through 40 minutes.

Soy scored early in the third for Alberta, before Philp and Linaker added tallies in the final frame.

The two sides will meet in the regular season finale, tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. at Clare Drake Arena.
