Thunderbirds sweep weekend series against Bisons men’s hockey

Linden McCorrister scored two goals for Manitoba in the loss.

WINNIPEG - The Manitoba Bisons men's hockey team squared up with the undefeated UBC Thunderbirds for the second consecutive day on Oct. 23 at Wayne Fleming Arena. The mini two-game series wrapped up the Bisons' first weekend homestand of the year.

Sixty minutes wasn't enough to decide a winner as the game went to overtime. UBC first-year forward Chris Douglas intercepted a Manitoba pass and sprung a 2-on-1 shorthanded where he buried the game-winner to give the Thunderbirds their second straight 4-3 victory over the Bisons.

"I was just trying to get my stick in the lane," Douglas said. "This weekend was a battle, but we found a way to get it done."

With the loss, Manitoba drops to 1-2-1 on the young season.

"This one hurts," said head coach Mike Sirant. "Our guys played hard and we executed well, we just couldn't close it out."

Sirant credited second-year netminder Jeremy Link, who made 28 saves in his first start of the season.

"Jeremy was very good; he did his job and gave us a chance to win."

The Bisons found themselves on the powerplay three times in the first period but were only able to capitalize once when Linden McCorrister opened the scoring with his first goal of the season. Manitoba's early lead only lasted ten minutes as UBC's Jarret Tyszka answered with the equalizer late in the period. The Bisons outshot the Thunderbirds ten to eight in the opening frame.

As they had in the first, the Bisons opened the scoring in the second period. Colton Veloso picked the puck off from the Thunderbirds defence and fired it over Ethan Anders' blocker to regain the Bisons lead. Tyszka and McCorrister traded goals for the second period in a row and Manitoba found themselves with a 3-2 lead heading into the final period.

The Thunderbirds applied relentless pressure in the third, outshooting the Bisons 15-9. With two minutes remaining, UBC defenceman Ryan Pouliot potted the equalizer to send the game to overtime.

The overtime period only lasted two minutes. With Jake Kryski in the penalty box with a four-minute major, the Thunderbirds delivered the final goal of the weekend shorthanded. The winner was Douglas' second of the year, and the win pushes the Thunderbirds perfect conference record to 4-0.

After the game, the Thunderbirds make their way back out west to prepare for a home series against MacEwan next weekend. The Bisons are back in action Friday, Oct. 29 when they host the Saskatchewan Huskies at Wayne Fleming Arena.
