REGINA — The University of Regina men's hockey team defeated the Manitoba Bisons 3-1 on Saturday afternoon, sweeping their Canada West weekend doubleheader at The Co-operators Centre in Regina.
Cougars goalie Brandon Holtby earned his third win in conference play this season, stopping 30 of 33 Manitoba shots including a Bisons breakaway in the dying seconds of the middle frame. Tanner Nagel, Bryce Platt, and Turner Ripplinger scored Regina's three goals.
"We're happy with the two wins this week," Cougars head coach Todd Johnson said. "The games this week and next are big for us, and with Manitoba sitting tight with us in the standings we're happy we got two wins against them."
Regina was active in front of the net, getting deflections on their first two goals. Nagel deflected a Brady Pouteau shot in the first and Platt picked up his second goal in as many nights off a deflected Tyler Heidt shot on a second period power play.
Manitoba's Hayden Ostir and Samuel Stewart assisted Brett Davis' third period goal, but that was as close as the Bisons would come and Ripplinger sealed it late with an empty netter.
Winners of three of their last four and riding a two-game winning streak, the Cougars will look to continue their success with a trip to Langley, B.C. next weekend for their first ever games against Trinity Western. They'll take on the Spartans on both Friday night and Saturday night.
Manitoba (1-6-1) returns home to face Mount Royal next weekend in Winnipeg.
