WINNIPEG — The Manitoba Bisons women's basketball team played the Regina Cougars Saturday, November 13 at the Investors Group Athletic Centre. The game ended in a tough 77-62 loss for the Bisons. This was their second game this weekend against each other.
The first quarter was tight, ending 18-15 in favour of the Cougars. The Manitoba Bisons struggled to get the lid off the net, shooting at 33 percent from the field. The quarter was finished by a buzzer-beater from the Cougars.
"Obviously, we had trouble scoring," said Michele Sung, the Manitoba Bisons head coach. "We're looking to improve on that. I think we took a step in the right direction."
Deidre Bartlett led Manitoba with 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting, while Taylor Randall and Emerson Martin chipped in 12 each. Jade Belmore was the hot shooter for Regina, scoring 28 points and 11 rebounds in 31 minutes.
With the Bisons only scoring three points in the second quarter, the Cougars grew their lead, entering the second half of the game with 33 points, 12 more than the Bisons.
The second half began with the Cougars starting to further increase their lead, finishing the third quarter with a 14-point lead, Cougars with 57 points to the Bisons's 43.
The fourth quarter was the Bisons' last chance to catch up. Small mistakes made by Manitoba early on turned into large ones that led to the Cougars' lead growing. Finishing the game with a 15-point lead, the Regina Cougars scored 77 points to the Bisons's 62.
"The second half was better," said Dave Taylor, head coach of the Regina Cougars. "I just wanted better shot selection, which I was happy with."
The Bisons face the Brandon Bobcats on Nov. 26. They are looking for a different outcome this time around.
