Cougars’ third period goal the difference in 3-2 win over Bisons women

Ashley Keller scored her fifth of the season as one of two Manitoba goals.

CALGARY – The Mount Royal University Cougars defeated the University of Manitoba Bisons 3-2 in a powerplay-filled scoring frenzy at Calgary Flames Community Arena on Friday night.

Manitoba's Sarah Dennehy scored the first powerplay goal of the night, and only goal in the first period, after tipping a shot from Kylie Lesuk. Lesuk's wrister came from the right point, flying towards the front of the net when Dennehy came from the back door, getting a stick on the puck and tipping it over Zoe De Beauville's left shoulder.

Halfway through the second period, MRU was on their second powerplay of the night. Courtney Kollman released a backhander from the right faceoff dot, beating Erin Fargey over the glove after picking up the rebound from Mackenzie Butz's shot from the left point.

A wrister from Halle Edwards went off the toe of De Beauville right to a wide-open Ashley Keller at the top of the crease, who put home the rebound between the glove and left pad of the fully stretched out Cougars goalie.

MRU tied up the game with one minute left in the second period with their second powerplay goal of the night on a breakaway opportunity. From her own blue line, Butz sprung Tianna Ko, who found herself behind two Bison defenders. Ko beat Manitoba's goalie glove side with a well-placed wrister in between the glove and left pad.

The game-winner was scored by Anna Purschke just over six minutes into the third period. Emma Bergesen released a slapshot from the right point towards a crowd of bodies. Purschke tipped the puck, beating the screened Bison's goalie.

The Cougars look to carry this moment from this come from behind win into tomorrow afternoon's rematch at Calgary Flames Community Arena at 3:00pm. Catch the game on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
