WINNIPEG – The Manitoba Bisons faced off against the Alberta Pandas on Saturday, November 27, for the second time this weekend. The Bisons met the Pandas the previous night in the Wayne Fleming Arena in what was a hectic 2-1 victory.
On Saturday, the Pandas responded to the Friday loss, blanking Manitoba in an important 2-0 win.
The first period ended in a 0-0 tie, with both teams taking multiple shot attempts but were ultimately unable to get anything in the net.
The second period was much the same, seeing both teams struggling to score. But in the last few seconds of the period, with just under 15 seconds left on the clock, the Pandas were able to find an opening. Jayden Morden caught the puck from Danica Namaka and was able to drop it into the net — securing a lead heading into the third period.
"There was an unfortunate mistake there going into the third period," said
Jon Rempel, head coach for the Manitoba Bisons. "Our group is young and learning how to manage situations; it takes time."
The final period played out very much the same as the other two. But after a long back and forth, Payton Laumbach would take advantage of an opportunity in front of an open net. This goal was Laumbach's fifth this season and would bring the game 2-0, favouring the Pandas, with eight minutes left on the clock.
With two minutes left in the clock and down two points, the Bisons pulled their goalie to achieve a quick goal. But, unfortunately, they struggled to get the puck to the net, and after a face-off with 30 seconds left on the clock, the game would end 0-2, with the Bisons unable to score.
The women's hockey team will be back after the winter break, facing the MacEwan Griffins on January 14. They are looking for a different result, hoping to improve on their now 8-4 record this season.
