WINNIPEG — The final day was the best yet for the Manitoba Bisons men's and women's swimming teams at the Canada West Swimming Championships, as the teams combined to haul five more medals — bringing their total to 12 for the weekend.
Kelsey Wog earned two gold medals in events where she holds the conference record, winning the 200-metre breaststroke in a time of 2:24.34 and the 200-metre individual medley in 2:11.74.
Wog was also a member of yet another women's relay team that finished on the podium, as she joined
Megan Mozill,
Dora Modrcin and
Kelsey Fillion in earning bronze in the weekend's finale event, the 4x100-medley relay. The foursome finished the race in 4:11.53.
A fourth-year who earned her first Canada West gold in the 50-metre backstroke on Friday, Modrcin wasn't finished there, as she also won silver in the 100-metre backstroke (49.73).
All in all, the Bisons women would finish fourth in the team standings, as the Calgary Dinos earned their first conference crown since 2009.
On the men's side, first-year
Daniel Boguski finished an outstanding conference championships debut, winning his second silver medal of the weekend in the all-out 100-metre freestyle. Racing in 49.73, he added to the silver he won in the 50-metre free.
The Bisons men would finish in seventh place, as the UBC Thunderbirds earned their eighth consecutive men's swimming title.
A-Final highlights for the Bisons on Day 3 included
Kelsey Fillion finishing sixth in the 100-metre freestyle (57.39),
Megan Mozill (1:03.05) and
Georgia Pengilly (1:03.49) finishing sixth and seventh in the 100-metre backstroke, respectively, and
Taylor Smith finishing sixth in the 200-metre breaststroke (2:35.02).
After the Prairie Winter Invitational in mid-December, Bisons swimming anticipate a busy second half with the Prairie College Cup in Calgary (January 28-29) serving as a tune-up for U SPORTS nationals, which will go February 25-27 in Quebec City.
