Competing in her first Olympic Games, fourth-year Bisons swimmer Kelsey Wog completed the individual portion of her schedule on Wednesday, finishing 16th in her signature event, the 200-metre breaststroke.
Wog qualified for the event semifinals in the 200-metre, racing to a 2:24.27 in this morning's preliminary heats. Unfortunately, she was disqualified from Wednesday night's semi-final for using a dolphin kick on the completion of a stroke during the race.
Earlier this week, she finished 23rd overall in the 100-metre breaststroke, racing a 1:07.73 in the preliminary heats.
Despite interruptions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Wog has remained on an astounding upward trajectory over the past two years. She was named the U Sports Female Athlete of the Year and a Top 8 Academic All-Canadian in 2019-20, recognizing excellence in the pool, the classroom, and Winnipeg community.
She has remained in competitive swimming throughout the 2020-21 break in varsity competition, taking part in the International Swim League (ISL) as a member of the Toronto Titans. She then qualified for the Tokyo Olympics by winning gold in both the 100-metre and 200-metre breaststroke at the Canadian Olympic trials.
Wog's schedule in Tokyo isn't finished yet, though. She is scheduled to swim the breaststroke leg for Canada's 4x100-metre medley relay team, who head into preliminaries at 6:52 a.m. Winnipeg time on Friday, July 30. The medley team will try to continue an excellent Olympics for Canadian women in the pool, with the event final going at 9:15 p.m. on Saturday, July 31.
