Lots at stake in busy away weekend for Bisons teams

Women's soccer look to secure a home playoff date, football right in the hunt, hockey aims for sweep

There's plenty at stake this weekend as numerous Bisons teams look to gain momentum heading towards playoff season. It's also record watch, as Bianca Cavalcanti of women's soccer and Marcel Arruda-Welch from the football team have the opportunity to permanently etch their names into Bisons history. Catch all of the action on CanadaWest.tv.

SOCCER
  • Manitoba (5-6-1) has cliched a playoff birth for the sixth time in the last seven seasons. If they win both of their games this weekend (Lethbridge at 1 pm tomorrow, Mount Royal at 2 pm on Sunday), they will host the prairie division playoff game against Mount Royal (6-5-1) on October 22. If Mount Royal wins on Sunday, the Bisons will travel there for the play-in game.
  • Forward Bianca Cavalcanti is one goal away from tying the single-season goal record of ten, which was set in 2007 by Karli Colpitts. Her 18 career goals are also tied for fourth all-time with Colpitts, and she is one goal shy of tying Bruna Mavignier for third. Desiree Scott is second, with 23 goals between 2006-09, and her teammate during that time, Caley Miskimmin, holds the record with 28 goals.
  • Goaltender Karina Bagi hasn't been scored on in over 180 minutes, and her goals against average of 1.01 is third in the conference amongst goalies that have played in at least ten games.
  • Manitoba's 15 goals allowed is tied for the fifth best in the conference.

FOOTBALL
  • The Bisons enter game six in a playoff spot at 2-3. They have the same record as third-place Alberta and fifth-place UBC, but have lost to the former, while beating the latter. The T-Birds will host Manitoba tomorrow at 3 pm. A win for the Bisons would give them the season series against UBC and put them one step closer to securing a postseason birth the following week.
  • Defensive back Marcel Arruda-Welch needs just two pass breakups to set a new program record of 21. The current record of 20 has been held by Teague Sherman for a decade.
  • The Bisons haven't beaten UBC at Thunderbird Stadium since 2013. Last year's meeting at the venue was won 26-24 by the T-Birds thanks to a touchdown grab by Trey Kellogg with 2:12 to go.
  • Manitoba won the first meeting of the season between the two teams 21-16 in a game that featured monsoon-like rain the entire time. Zachary Wynne scored his first career touchdown in the contest, while Dolan Hills and Isaac Dokken combined for 22 tackles.

MEN'S HOCKEY
  • Manitoba will look to sweep Regina when they face the Cougars at 3 pm tomorrow. The Herd won game one 2-1, and both teams are 1-2 on the season.
  • Defenceman Chase Hartje continued his impressive start to the 2022-23 Canada West season on Friday night in Regina, recording a goal and an assist. Hartje now has ten points in three games, which ties him for first in the conference with Riley Sawchuk and Nolan Yaremko of Mount Royal, who have played one and two more games, respectively. Hartje's point total also matches his numbers from all of last year, where he played in 15 regular season games.
  •  Ross Hawryluk made 22 saves in the third period and 39 overall for his first career U SPORTS win.
