LANGLEY -- The Trinity Western Spartans tied the team record for attempts, 140, in a three set match and improved to 2-0 on the season with a straight set victory over the visiting Manitoba Bisons Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C. Despite being, a straight set victory for TWU the match was a highly contested affair, with the Spartans prevailing 32-30, 25-19, and 29-27.
Meaghan Mealey with 11 kills and eight digs, and Ansah Odoom with 10 kills, six digs, and three blocks led the Spartans. While Light Uchechukw with 12 kills, nine digs, and four blocks and
Raya Surinx with 12 kills, and seven digs led the Bisons.
TWU's Dora Komlodi had 29 set assists to go with nine digs and two blocks to lead the Spartans, while Manitoba's
Katreena Bentley finished with 33 set assists, nine digs and three blocks to lead the Bisons.
All three sets were thrillers, with both first and third needing extra points. Bentley and libero
Julia Arnold (19 digs) put their bodies on the line numerous times to sustain rallies, while middle
Eve Catojo led the team with eight assisted blocks. The Spartans, however, kept pushing, fighting off a number of set points for the Herd.
In the third, Manitoba led 22-19 against the defending national champs, but Trinity battled back with five of the next seven points. Kills from Uchechukwu and middle
Brenna Bedosky (four kills, four assisted blocks, one solo block) tied the game at 24, and the Herd put the hosts on their heels with an
Andi Almonte kill off hands from just past the three-metre line to make to 26-25.
After surrending the lead, Almonte stepped up with one of her four assisted blocks to tie the score at 27. She had 11 points overall, including eight digs and eight kills. The hosts won two of the next three points to secure the sweep.
Manitoba returns home this weekend for their home-opener on Saturday.
