The Mount Royal University Cougars defeated the University of Manitoba Bisons 4-0 for their second victory in as many nights.
Â
MRU drew first blood early in the game. Third year forward,Â
Athena Hauck picked up the puck with space at the top of the circle and ripped a wrister past Bisons netminder,
Emily Shippam.
Â
The Bisons pushed back and found a breakaway, butÂ
Kaitlyn Ross flashed the leather to keep Manitoba off the board. Ross, who was making her second straight start, has been solid all season.
Â
In the second period, both teams were shaken up by a scary incident.Â
Camryn Amundson was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for crosschecking Bisons' defenceman,
Bailey Fiala. Fiala stayed down for a few minutes and had to be helped off the ice by athletic therapy staff.
Â
The Cougars killed off the five-minute Bisons powerplay with Ross standing tall and her penalty killers keeping the play to the outside.
Â
Mount Royal gained their own powerplay immediately after killing the major.Â
MacKenzie Butz slapped a shot that made its way through the screens untouched and went post-and-in.
Â
Despite late period pressure by Manitoba, MRU headed into the intermission up 2-0.
Â
Halfway through the third, the Cougars extended their lead.Â
Morgan Ramsay scored from her knees off a centering pass by Hauck.
Â
With under two minutes to play,Â
Tatum Amy banged in a loose puck to make it 4-0 for MRU.
Â
Ross registered the shutout, and the Cougars took two of two wins against Manitoba this weekend.
