MHKY: Second period barrage helps Calgary beat Manitoba 8-2

Tony Apetagon and Chase Hartje scored for Manitoba

WINNNIPEG -- -- Three goals in the middle of the second period helped Calgary break away from Manitoba, winning 8-2 on Friday night at Wayne Fleming Arena. Trailing by one after 20, Manitoba tied the game on a snap shot from forward Tony Apetagon, making his return from injury, however Calgary pushed back with five goals in 11 minutes and sustained their momentum the rest of the way.

The shots after twenty minutes were a good indication of the first period with the Dinos leading the Bisons 18-1. A handful of those shots came from an early powerplay. There were some good chances for Calgary, but it was an even better penalty kill for Manitoba. A blocker save from Bisons netminder Ross Hawryluk came at the tail end, doing everything he could to keep the puck out of the net.

Riding the momentum of a high-pressure powerplay, Dinos defenceman Dakota Krebs capitalized on a slapshot from the high slot just over the pad of Hawryluk to give the visitors the lead.

A second and third powerplay gave Calgary some great chances with Hawryluk facing shot after shot but he continued to shut the door. With just over four minutes left, a shot from Calgary hit the post and floated just above the blue line before the Bisons were able to clear.

When the second period started, it seemed like the Bisons would turn things around. After an early powerplay finished, Apetagon sent a shot low glove side to tie the game.

The Bisons were unable to keep this energy going, as the Dinos scored five times in the second.

"We're giving up untimely goals," said Bisons captain Geordie Keane. "We score, we get momentum and then the next shift, they score. Key parts in games are after goals and we're just not doing a good enough job barring down and getting through that next two minutes after we score."

The first goal came just as the Dinos powerplay expired and forward Josh Maser got his stick on a redirect in front for a tip-in. The second was another tip in on a redirect from forward Jadon Joseph on a pass from King, and the final of the rapid three came from forward Mack Stewart as he picked up the puck, sped through the neutral zone and got it under the glove of Hawryluk.

The Dinos showed the Bisons no mercy scoring two more goals with just over five minutes left in the period. Forward Riley Stotts took advantage of a missed pass from the side of the Bisons net to dump the puck shorthanded.

The Bisons responded with a two on one but Dinos netminder Carl Tetachuk denied them with a big stretch and toe save.

In the dying seconds of the period, a backhander from Dinos forward Connor Gutenberg made it a 6-1 game.

Bisons defenceman Chase Hartje found a seam to the net with a wrister off the top of the circle three minutes into the third (his 13th point of the season, second amongst defencemen in the conference), responding to the Dinos handful of goals, but it wasn't enough. Calgary scored two more times to seal the deal.

The Bisons will face the Dinos again tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
