CALGARY– The University of Manitoba Bisons women's hockey team defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 5-4 in overtime Saturday afternoon at Father David Bauer Arena. After falling behind 4-0 in the second period, the Dinos rallied back to send the game to overtime. Calgary's comeback would be cut short midway through overtime when Bisons forward
Camille Enns corralled the puck off a rebound and fired it into the back of the net for the winner.
Elizabeth Lang, who scored the first two goals for Calgary today, commended her team's resilience in not giving up despite the early deficit.
"Being able to come back in the way that we did proves how resilient we are," Lang said. "When we do get into situations where we are down, we can crawl our way back. Obviously next time we want to do it from the start, but three goals in the last period is pretty good."
The game opened much differently from Friday night's matchup. Manitoba was a team on a mission during the first period, shocking the Calgary crowd and scoring three in the opening frame. Manitoba capitalized on an early power play opportunity to open the scoring. After initially looking strong on the power kill, Calgary was unable to hold onto the puck and turned it back over to the Bisons. Manitoba reset in their own end and charged down the left wing. Three Bisons flew towards the net and it proved to be too much for Dinos goalie
Gabriella Durante, as she was able to make the first save but not the second. It was second-year forward
Julia Bird who was credited with the goal, her second of the season.
Just two minutes later, the Bisons once again made the most of a Dinos turnover.
Brenna Nicol scooped up the puck and dropped it to her trailing teammate
Aimee Patrick. Patrick sized up Durante with a couple of back and forth stick moves before sniping a short side in the top corner to beat Durante glove side. Calgary would go on to put pressure of their own, with fifth-year centre
Jada Burke crashing the net after an offensive flurry, which led to a power play for the Dinos. Just like yesterday Meagen Relf stepped up in a big way for the Bisons making a number of big saves in the frame. Relf showed better control today, sending rebounds out of harm's way.
With just two minutes to play in the opening period, the Bisons once again rumbled down the right wing. In the commotion, the Dinos lost track of Bisons third-year forward Polina Goncharoa, who snuck in behind the defence and received a well-placed pass in front of the net. Goncharova, originally from Moscow, Russia, made a nifty move to the backhand and beat Durante scoring her first career U SPORTS goal which put Manitoba up 3-0.
Midway through the second,
Ashley Keller sent a saucer pass the length of the ice to teammate
Aimee Patrick. The puck hopped, skipped and danced around two Dinos defenders, leading to a 2-0 breakaway for the Bisons. Patrick dropped the puck to
Molly Kunnas, who ripped it glove side, putting the Bisons up 4-0. Shortly after Calgary was awarded with yet another power play. This time the Dinos would not waste their opportunity. After cycling for over one minute,
Sophia Zuck and
Elizabeth Lang zipped in front of the net.
Sydney Mercier, who had the puck behind the crease, passed the puck to Lang in the slot, where she buried the first of the game for Calgary from point blank range.
Following the goal energy shot back into the building, with just six minutes to play in the second period,
Alli Borrow was sprung on a coast-to-coast pass. One-on-one with the defender, Burrow reached into her bag of tricks and dangled the Bisons defender. Alas, it seemed as though last night's magic had run out for Borrow, as Relf made a kick save at the final moment, to keep the Bisons 4-1 lead after two.
The Dinos would carry the momentum into the final frame. Just 30 seconds into the third period, Lang received a pass from
Kate Wagner in the slot. Lang patiently waited for her opportunity and then snapped a laser of a shot past Relf. Nine minutes later Borrow made a nice play, dropping a behind the back pass to
Josie McLeod down the left wing, deep in the Bisons zone. McLeod took the pass and skated in directly towards the goal, switching to the backhand at the last moment, scoring five-hole on Relf.
After taking a costly tripping penalty with five minutes to play, the Dinos showed great effort and were able to kill off the power play. Immediately after, the Dinos roared back on offence, forechecking hard to keep the puck in the Bisons zone. With just seconds to play, Burke dug the puck out from behind the net and sent it across the boards to Lang. Lang caught sight of a wide open Mercier, who buried the equalizer with just 42.1 seconds left in regulation.
Overtime would last just two and a half minutes. Both teams were playing extremely hard and physically, as a result a number of penalties were called. Manitoba found themselves on the power play. After Durante turned away the first two shots,
Camille Enns of the Bisons netted the game winner, which concluded this exciting matchup.
The Dinos (4-7-2) will look to get back in the win column as they will be home again next weekend as they host the Trinity Western Spartans (6-5-2) for a pair of games at Father David Bauer Arena. Friday's opener will begin at 7 p.m, with Saturday's contest set for a 3 p.m. puck drop. The Bisons (4-8) will return to Alberta next weekend to take on the MacEwan Griffins (3-7-1). Friday and Saturday's game will be played at 7 p.m and 3 p.m. MT, respectively.
