For the first time in a long time, the Manitoba Bisons entered weekend play with a healthy lineup, and it showed. The returns of forward
Dylan Thiessen and defenceman Mitch Dyck, along with
Linden McCorrister and
Liam Schioler the week prior made a noticeable difference, as the Bisons snapped a six-game losing streak with a 7-1 win against the MacEwan Griffins.
Three Bison forwards scored two goals, including McCorrister, along with
Devon Skoleski and
Colton Veloso, while
Brett Davis added three points, and is tied for Skoleski for the team lead, with 18. With the win, Manitoba improved to 5-8, just two points behind MacEwan for the sixth and final playoff spot in the conference.
"I played against Calgary last weekend, and kind of got my feet wet," said McCorrister. "Obviously, today felt a lot better with a full week of practice and then scoring two today, and then Devo [Skoleski] and Velo [Veloso] also scored two. So, the whole team played really well."
The Bisons started off strong with a goal in the first minute and half. The tally came from McCorrister off a rebound which dribbled under Griffins netminder Ashton Abel's pad.
MacEwan responded with pressure in the Bisons zone, maintaining possession but were unable to get pucks to the net.
During a four-on-four, things went awry for the Griffins when Skoleski took a pass from shut down defenceman Ryan Gottfried from the blue line. As if he was wearing an invisibility cloak, Skoleski walked in front of the net with no pressure to make it a 2-0 game after one. The assist was Gottfried's first at the U SPORTS level.
The second period felt like déjà vu when Skoleski scored again in the first minute and a half. He slipped through, unnoticed, with a clean shot on net, making it 3-0.
The Bisons played with skill, speed, and physicality. Captain
Geordie Keane had two big hits on MacEwan in the period, riling up the crowd, including a bodycheck on forward Carter Chorney.
Later, on the Bisons powerplay, Davis received a cross-ice pass, firing a one-timer that went off both posts and the crossbar and eventually landed at the feet of Veloso who tapped it in on a wide-open cage.
Davis' stick was still hot from the powerplay. Forward
Hayden Ostir fed him a cross-ice pass after the former received an unbelievable end-to-end dish from Schioler. Left all alone, he scored with a one timer on an open net for a 5-0 Bisons lead. Abel saved many tough shots from the Bisons but was pulled and swapped for Thomas Davis.
On a race to the puck in the third, McCorrister beat two Griffins and with some space, scored a wraparound far side for his second goal of the game and season.
"Codey [Behun] made a good play, chipped it wide and he had a lot of time around the net," said McCorrister of his first goal. "I just went to the net and the puck was sitting there. And the second one, same with Dyl [Thiessen]. He was grinding down low there, made a good play and I kinda got lucky with a wraparound."
The Bisons followed that up with a powerplay goal and second of the night for Veloso on the rebound.
Bisons netminder Ross Hawryluk made some big saves to defend his net but a desperate Griffins team ended his shutout on a one-timer from forward Marc Pasemko late in the third to make it a 7-1 game. The netminder still made 46 saves on the day, which tied for the most in his Bisons career.
The Bisons will look to pick up two more points against the Griffins tomorrow at 2 p.m.
