REGINA -- A three point game was broken wide open in the third quarter, as the Regina Cougars out-scored the Manitoba Bisons 22-11 en route to a 81-73 win on Saturday night at home.
The win snapped a historic start to the season for the Herd, who were 5-0 for the first time since joining CanWest, and were looking to head back to IGAC as the only undefeated team in the conference. The Cougars had other plans, as Carter Millar recorded a double-double with 23 points and 14 boards, while Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo scored 18 on five-of-ten shooting from the field, most of which came on drives into the lane in the second half.
Manitoba was led by 18 points from
Elijah Lostracco, while
Jonam Kazadi had a career-high 11 points in 16 minutes of action.Â
The Herd entered halftime up 41-38, and got five blocks in the third, two from
Isaac Miller-Jose, but they were unable to sustain their momentum. Millar came alive from three, while the Cougars got 29 defensive boards and capitalized on a handful of Manitoba turnovers in succession towards the end of three. The visitors also went 11-for-23 from the line, which came back to bite them late as they fought tooth and nail down by six.Â
The Bisons are back at home this weekend, taking on Saskatchewan to end the first half of the season. Manitoba is in sole possession of second, just two wins behind 7-1 Brandon, while the Huskies are off to a 1-5 start, which includes four combined losses to the Bobcats and Cougars, who are 4-2.
