MHKY: Powerplay helps Golden Bears beat Manitoba 7-1

Jonny Hooker had the lone Bisons goal

EDMONTON - Scoring three times on seven powerplay attempts, a relentless Golden Bears attack was too much for the visitors, with Alberta picking up a 7-1 win over the Manitoba Bisons on Friday night.

Ryan Hughes scored twice, including one on the man advantage, with Dawson Davison and Dylan Plouffe also adding powerplay markers. Tyler Preziuso, Josh Prokop, and Daneel Lategan also scored for Alberta (9-1-1), who picked up their fourth-straight win. The loss for Manitoba (4-5-0) is their third-straight, having been outscored 18-3 in those contests.

Jonny Hooker scored the lone Manitoba goal in the third period, for a Bison team missing two key offensive players, and were forced to dress just 19 skaters.

Nick Schneider stopped 17 of the 18 shots he faced, picking up his fourth win of the season. Ross Hawryluk stopped 26 of the 32 shots he faced over 33 minutes, getting pulled midway though the second. Simon Harkness made 10 saves on 11 shots in relief.

Alberta dominated from the opening puck drop onwards, scoring three goals on 18 first-period shots. Davidson and Plouffe both beat Hawryluk from point shots on the powerplay, with Prokop beating the Bison netminder on a two-on-one rush.

The Bisons managed just four shots in the second, giving up three more tallies in the first 13 minutes. Preziuso added to his conference lead with his ninth goal of the season, before Hughes fired two laser beams over Hawryluk's shoulder three minutes apart.

Hooker and Lategan traded goals 23 seconds apart in the third.

Alberta and Manitoba will battle again tomorrow at 7:00 pm at Clare Drake Arena.
