Fresh off of a weekend where they added two top-five single game performances to the record books, the No. 9 Bisons (2-2) are back at it on Friday, taking on the undefeated, No. 2 nationally ranked Saskatchewan Huskies (4-0) on the road. The action kicks off on Friday at 7 pm, and can be viewed on Canada West TV.
The Bisons re-entered the national rankings this week after a dominating performance at home against Calgary where they allowed just 104 total yards, the third least in program history. They also rushed for 352, which was a top-five total.
The major storyline entering this one is the play of Manitoba's lights-out defence -- which hasn't allowed a major over two straight wins -- against a Huskies offence that is third in the nation, with 459.3 yards per game. Hec Crighton favourite Mason Nyhus has been the catalyst for the Huskies through the air. The veteran quarterback leads the nation with 1400 passing yards and has thrown just one interception all season. On the ground, Ryker Frank, who's stepped up for an injured Josh Ewanchyna, leads the conference with 396 rushing yards, averaging just under 100 per game.
Combating the Huskies' offensive juggernaut is a defence that's seen numerous players step up. Weak side linebacker
Dolan Hills is in the top ten in the conference in tackles, thanks in part to 16.5 over his last two games, after starting in place of injured All-Canadian
Nick Thomas. The national player of the week this past week also has an interception, sack and pass breakup and is part of a versatile linebacking corps that also includes
Isaac Dokken (seventh in the conference in tackles, with 23) and
Markos Bockru (11.5 tackles, third in the conference with three pass breakups).
On the back end, All-Canadian
Marcel Arruda-Welch has locked down the boundary side at corner, while safety
Stephen Adamopoulos has had an all-star calibre year in his second season starting at the position, and has three pass breakups.
Sebastien Reid also got his first interception of the season at the field corner spot last week, while
Nick Conway and
Austin Balan are aggressive coming downhill and have combined for four pass breakups.
On offence, running back
Breydon Stubbs will look to build off of a game where he eclipsed 100 yards rushing for the first time. His 364 all-purpose yards are ninth in the conference as part of a dangerous three-headed monster in the backfield.
HOOFPRINTS
- With 6,279 passing yards, quarterback Des Catellier is just 121 yards shy of entering the top three in program history in that department, just behind Theo Deezar, a player he shared time with during the earlier portion of his career.
- Kicker Niko DiFonte is a perfect four-for-four on field goals this season, and he's now eclipsed the top 20 all-time in that category in U SPORTS, with 61. He needs just ten to enter the top ten.
