WINNIPEG – It was a memorable Saturday night for veteran guard
Lauren Bartlett, who had a career game against the MacEwan Griffins. She posted the fifth triple double in program history in a 73-56 win for the Herd, who improved to 4-12.
Bartlett put up 16 points, 11 assists, and a massive ten steals in a stellar showing. Her 11 assists breaks the previous 16-year record of ten, while her ten steals were the second most in one evening, just behind former Defensive Player of the Year Rachel Hart's 11 from 15 years ago.
The Griffins' Makenzie Farmer would put up 16 points, two rebounds, three assists, and three steals as she fought to keep her team in the game.
"We were disciplined, but not satisfied with our performance last night," said Bartlett.
"We wanted to bring a lot more energy and willingness to compete, especially on 50/50 balls – that was our major mindset coming into the game tonight."
The Bisons continued to stay hot from the previous night, going on a quick 11-point run to start the game and setting the tone offensively for the rest of the first.
Backdoor passes were the Bisons bread and butter from the get-go – a no-look backdoor dish in specific by forward
Autumn Agar would brilliantly display the Bisons pass-first mentality that they have been working on since the beginning of the season.
Bartlett would also get it going on the defensive end, picking up four steals in the first quarter and hustling down the court for quick outlet passes to her teammates or layup for herself.
Both teams would go back and forth in the second, with the Griffins bringing the lead within five multiple times – led by guard Toni Gordon who would drop nine points and two steals in the half off some shifty moves to the bucket.
The Bisons would capitalize on their efficient rebounding – grabbing 38 as a team in the first half, with forward
Emily Johnson snatching eight rebounds for herself alone.
A massive half-court buzzer-beater for Griffins forward Mackenzie Farmer would narrow the difference, sending both teams into the half with the Bisons leading 38-34.
Both teams would come out of the half with vigour and intensity as they fought for a comfortable lead – continuously going back and forth on the hardwood.
Griffins guard Mackenzie Farmer would take matters into her own hands – entering the fourth with 16 points as she started feeling it from three-point range.
Bisons guard
Mar Tomas Arbos would also get it going by using her length to generate some great offence to bring the Bisons back on top – putting up a career-high 17 points, seven rebounds, and a mind-boggling five steals as the team entered the fourth.
Overall, four Bisons players finished with double digits in a game Manitoba never trailed.
Manitoba is still in the thick of the playoff race, just one win behind UNBC and Lethbridge for the final two playoff spots. They face Winnipeg next Friday in a home and home as part of the Duckworth Challenge.
