Box Score LANGLEY -- A marathon game out west was won by the Trinity Western Spartans, as they handed Manitoba their first overtime loss of the season, 2-1 on Friday night. The Herd were 2-0 coming in, and 4-0 over the last two seasons in the extra session. Despite the loss, Manitoba gets a single point, however they still trail the Spartans by four points for the final playoff spot.Â
Kate Gregoire scored the lone Bisons goal -- the first of the game -- seven minutes into the second period. Sarah Denneny won a faceoff just outside the blue line and dished it to
Dana Goertzen, who created space down the left side while entering the zone. Near the half wall, she shot a lazerbeam pass to Gregoire, who tipped it in for the impressive finish.Â
Trinity scored short-handed in the second, and neither team was able to score in the final 20.
Kimberley Davidson recorded a few big saves in the final three minutes to ensure the game remained level, including a quick stop on a five-hole attempt after a Spartans forward created a one-on-one opportunity in the Bisons end.Â
Trinity had a great chance midway through the first five-minute overtime on a two-on-one, but Davidson was up to the task. Manitoba had two great opportunities in three-on-three 2OT, including a partial breakaway and a chance from in front by
Julia Bird, but both were stopped.Â
With just five seconds left in 2OT, Trinity stole one, scoring on a two-on-one on a wrist shot.Â
The two teams will play again tomorrow with plenty at stake in the playoff race.
