Box Score WINNIPEG -- A dominant display on the ground paved the way for the Manitoba Bisons on Sunday afternoon against Calgary, as the hosts defeated the Dinos 34-21 for their second win in a row. They now hold sole possession of the fourth and final playoff spot in the conference standings at 2-3, while the Dinos fell to 0-5.
Starting quarterback
Jackson Tachinski led all players with 110 rushing yards (his first time going over 100 as a Bison) on just 13 carries for an 8.5 yard average and two scores.
Tachinski is now fourth in Canada West, with 297 yards on the ground. He also threw for 171 yards and a score on 15-of-19 passing. Over the last two games since returning from injury, Tachinski has 683 all-purpose yards and six majors.
"Today we were just pretty physical," said Tachinski. "One of our goals this week was to be sharp and to be physical. I think we displayed that our there and we kind of gave it to them. We were just running the ball all over. When we're physical and when we're sharp and mentally there, I don't think anyone can really stop us on the ground."
Overall, Manitoba -- paced by linemen
Sean Rowe,
Giordano Vaccaro,
Mark Rauhaus,
Ryder Klisowsky,
Matt Stokman and
Victor Olaniran -- rushed for 316 yards, the second season in a row where they've gone over 300 against the Dinos. It's the seventh-most rushing yards in a game, after chunking up 356 in a 2022 victory at home.
The Herd averaged 7.2 yards on the ground, with all four running backs amassing at least 40 yards, including
Breydon Stubbs, who went over 1000 for his Bisons career. It's also the second game in a row where Manitoba rushed for over 200 yards, after going off for 245 one week ago against Regina.
"Our offensive line did a great job, our running backs did a great job, every one of them," said head coach
Brian Dobie.
"First of all, the backs ran really hard. That was the most north-south, physical game I've seen from the running backs in general. And then you mix in all the moves in shakes with guys like
Vaughan Lloyd and
Shakur Harris, who are capable of big plays. The offensive line, credit where credit is due. They're getting off the ball and moving people. That's how you rush for 316."
Calgary started the game off hot, with leading receiver Gob Deng (led all players with 138 yards) hauling in a 68-yard pass in single coverage on the Dinos' first play from scrimmage. It led to a one-yard plunge from pivot Dom Britton, giving the Dinos their only lead of the game.
The Bisons responded on the ensuing drive, as Tachinski led the Herd on a 10-play, 77-yard drive aided by a 22-yard rush from Stubbs. Tachinski finished the drive off with a one-yard major of his own. It was the first of 34 unanawered points from the hosts.
Manitoba took the lead less than two minutes into the second, and didn't trail the rest of the way. Tachinski found leading receiver
Brendt Adams (fifth in CanWest with 341 yards) on a 56-yard pass, a Stubbs rounded things out with his first major one play later.
The turning point in the game came with a minute left in the first half. The Dinos had driven to the Bisons 50, and were faced with a third and one. Matthieu Clarke took the handoff, but was held short of a first down by defensive tackle
Kaleb Mackie-Mcleod, who finished the game with 2.5 tackles.
The Dinos defence, led by Ben Dobson's six tackles and a fumble recovery, forced two fumbles and were set up in Manitoba territory on three straight drives in the first half, but three missed field goals and the third down stop halted their momentum.
Manitoba marched for six just four plays after the Dinos turnover, as Tachinski rushed for 25 yards and
AK Gassama had 32 yards receiving. Adams finished off the drive with his third major of the year. He also led the Herd with 92 yards on five catches, and has gone over 70 yards in nine of his 12 games as a Bison.
Manitoba added another Tachinski major in the third and got two field goals from
Maya Turner, who is four-for-four in her U SPORTS career to round out their scoring.
The Dinos made a game of it in the fourth, as Britton finished the game with 261 yards and a score, leading his team to two late scoring drives, but it wasn't enough to close the gap.
Both teams will have a bye next week for thanksgiving.
