Weekend preview

Women's Hockey Mike Still, Bison Sports

Pink in the Rink and Seniors Night headline busy home weekend

Women's hockey opens their home schedule on Pink in the Rink night, while the women's soccer team needs a win over Regina to clinch a playoff spot.

Women's hockey opens their home schedule tonight at 7 pm (rematch tomorrow at 2 pm) against UBC (click here for tickets), while the women's soccer team welcomes Regina (click here for tickets) and Saskatchewan (click here for tickets) at 12 pm, respectively, on a busy home weekend.

Friday's women's hockey home opener is also Pink in the Rink night, one of the Bisons' six targeted events in the 2023-24 calendar. All proceeds will go directly to CancerCare Manitoba, and fans are encouraged to wear pink.

Bisons passports will also be available for all young fans. Each targeted event comes with a unique stamp that fans can add to their passport. Autographs will also be signed by members of the women's hockey team after the game.

On the ice, the T-Birds (3-0-0-1) have won the last five games they've played against Manitoba (0-2), however the Bisons own a 19-9 record against UBC on home ice since 2007.

For Manitoba, fourth-year veteran forwards and long-time friends Sarah Dennehy and Kate Gregoire have both found the back of the net this year, adding to their impressive legacies in brown and gold.

Dennehy needs just one point for 30 in her career, and she will also play in her 80th career regular season game tonight. Gregoire needs just one assist for 20 in her career and eight points to reach 50 overall. Saturday's afternoon game will mark her 80th career regular season game. Additionally, captain Kate Gregoire will play in her time-high 109th career regular season game tonight, and 110th tomorrow.

On the pitch, the women's soccer team has plenty at stake in the final weekend of regular season play.

If the Bisons beat Regina (game at west turf field) tomorrow at 12 pm, they will clinch a playoff birth for the eighth time in the last nine seasons under head coach Vanessa Martinez-Lagunas.

The following afternoon against Saskatchewan is seniors night (game at IG Field), where forwards Janelle Chomini and Nicole Davis, as well as goalkeeper Karina Bagi will be honored in their final regular season home game. If the Bisons lose to Regina, they will need to beat the Huskies, and hope for a Cougars loss or tie to the Winnipeg Wesmen in order to advance to the post-season.

The Cougars beat Manitoba 3-1 at home the first time the two teams played. True freshman Taryn Cabak, who leads the Bisons with three goals, scored her first career tally in the inaugural matchup, and has thrived in an attacking midfielder spot after previously starting at centre back and wing this season.

Cabak has nine shots and two goals in her last three games, while winger Breyanna Johnston-Krulicki has recorded three assists over the last two games. For Regina, Winnipeg native Peyton Enns is the player to watch. She's scored against her local squad in back to back games dating back to 2022, and is always a threat with her speed and aggressiveness.

Bagi will be playing for history during Sunday's seniors game. She needs just 11 shots entering play to tie the career record of 225, set in 2009. The last time the two sides played in 2023 (Sask won 1-0), Bagi made six saves.
