WINNIPEG -- There was no shortage of offence on Saturday afternoon at the West Turf, as the Manitoba Bisons and Regina Cougars tied 4-4 in a must-win game for both sides.Â
The Herd led 2-1 at halftime and 4-2 with less than six minutes to go, but the Cougars kept fighting, scoring the tying goal in the 90th to draw level and keep their playoff hopes alive.
Manitoba remains two points up on the Cougars for the fifth and final playoff spot in the CanWest Prarie Division, with 13 entering their final regular season game tomorrow against second place Saskatchewan (9-3-1). If the Bisons win or tie, they will clinch a playoff spot for the eighth time in the last nine seasons under head coach Vanessa Martinez-Lagunas. If they lose, they'll need Winnipeg to defeat Regina, as the Cougars have the season series after a 3-1 win earlier this year.Â
Manitoba got two goals from forward
Janelle Chomini, who leads the team with five on the season. Captain
Jessica Tsai also scored her second of the year on a penalty kick set up by a breakaway from
Nicole Davis, who was taken down in the box. The goal counted as a shot on net for Tsai, who needs just one more shot on goal to tie the program record of 87.Â
The Herd's other goal was scored by substitute
Paris Sidhu, who's scored in back-to-back games after she bent a beauty under the bar last weekend against Winnipeg. In net,
Karina Bagi made ten impressive saves. She needs just one to tie the program record of 225, set back in 2009.Â
Manitoba scored six minutes in to take the lead, as Davis received an excellent lob pass, using her speed to get inside positioning on the right flank. She then dished off to Chomini across the pitch, who tapped in the ball with her right foot just inside the far post.
Allyson Schneider responded with her first of two goals for Regina in the 12th. Her shot from 30 yards out went between the legs of Bagi and in. Less than a minute later, Manitoba answered, as Davis was taken down by Regina's keeper, leading to Tsai's goal on the penalty kick.Â
The Cougars had multiple chances to even the score through the first 30 minutes of the second half, but Bagi denied every opportunity. She made a remarkable post-to-post stop early on, and got just enough of a Cougars free kick in the 70th to clear the ball above the crossbar. She also stopped a breakaway just prior to the 79th.Â
Schneider ultimately tied the game in the 79th, setting the stage for a marathon of goals in the final 11.
Regina created chaos in the box after a free kick, and Manitoba was unable to clear the ball. It ended up on Schneider's foot, who got just enough to beat Bagi.Â
The Bisons made it 4-2 with two goals less than a minute after in the 83rd, with Chomini's fifth of the year and Sidhu's second, assisted by Davis. But Regina pushed back. Kirsten Koellmel made it a one-goal game in the 84th, and Gemma Gaucher got her first of the year in the 90th to level the score, going high on Bagi on a partial breakaway.Â
"This was the most eventful game I've ever been a part of," said Davis post-game. "Five goals happened in the span of ten minutes. I don't even know how that happened, I've never seen that before in my life playing soccer. You can never relax with games like this. We're both so competitive. You can't let your guard down."
Tomorrow's game against Saskatchewan at IG Field will be Manitoba's senior game, where Davis, Bagi and Chomini will be honored in their last regular season home game.Â
