WHKY: Bisons rally from two down, pick up first win of the season in 6-3 home-ice victory over MacEwan

Eight different Manitoba Bisons recorded a point Friday night as the club escaped an early 2-0 deficit to the delight of the home crowd.

Box Score It's safe to say the Bisons played their best game of the season as they reached the win column for the first time over the visiting MacEwan Griffins at Wayne Fleming Arena.

Things got going early as the Bisons took their first of three first-period penalties 46 seconds into the game, and the Griffins capitalized with a wraparound powerplay goal by Makenna Schuttler. The unassisted tally was her first of the year.

The next Bison penalty came just under four minutes later, and though the Griffins didn't convert on the powerplay, Allee Isley's second goal of the season came just seconds after it ended. Isley deflected the puck into the Bison net after a Sydney Hughson point shot to put the road squad up by two at 6:34 of the first.

The Bisons then turned the momentum around thanks to some great effort in puck battles by fourth-year centre Sam Sichkaruk.

The Bisons hemmed the Griffins into their own zone on a gritty, hard-working shift before Glory Plett came out of a puck battle along the boards and set up a one-time blast by Rachel Gottfried that found mesh. Her first goal of the season put the Bisons on the board going into the first intermission.

The Bisons continued the momentum into the second. The roof blew off Wayne Fleming Arena at the 8:49 mark, as Camille Enns jumped in from the blueline and wired a wrist-shot over the shoulder of MacEwan goaltender Brianna Sank. Her first goal of the year was assisted by Aimee Patrick and Sarah Dennehy after an offensive-zone shift full of Manitoba chances. The game was tied at two after two periods.

The Bisons once again rode a wave of momentum into a new period, scoring early and often in the third. It started with Aimee Patrick's first goal of the year just 25 seconds in and continued with her second just under three minutes later. Samantha Sichkaruk put the Bisons up by three only 28 seconds after that, to make it 5-2 Manitoba less than four minutes after the intermission.

A Bison penalty a few minutes later gave the Griffins some life back, and Jesse Jack scored her first of the year to cut the lead. It was the third powerplay goal of the game for MacEwan.

As the minutes ticked by, MacEwan played with urgency to shrink the lead even more but ran out of time. In the final minute of the game, Ashley Keller jumped on an area pass from Camryn Gillis in the offensive zone, and the third-year Bison forward beat Sank one last time to make it 6-3 Manitoba.

The Bisons had mostly been led by Kate Gregoire and Kylie Lesuk on the scoresheet before tonight, with the duo combining for six points over the club's first four games. Tonight, with Lesuk and Gregoire being held off the scoresheet, Sichkaruk and Enns each picked up a goal and an assist, and Sarah Dennehy recorded three helpers.

"It was a great team win tonight, the girls responded after running into penalty trouble early on," said coach Jordyn Zacharias postgame. "They rallied around each other going into the second and showed a lot of resilience."

The teams will do it again tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock local time.
