WINNIPEG – For the second night in a row, Manitoba and Lethbridge's game was decided in the final minute, and once again the Pronghorns came out on top with a 77-72 win at IGAC on Saturday night.
The win improved their record to 5-3 while Manitoba fell to 2-6.
Six different Pronghorns scored in double figures in the contest, led by Ukraine native Vlada Hozalova, who had 16 points, two shy of her career best.
The national team member at the U16, U18 and U20 levels nailed a triple that tied the game at 70 with 1:18 left, and she also iced the contest in the final seconds at the free throw line.
The game-winner came from Abby Graves with 56 seconds left. She forced a steal on the ensuing Manitoba possession and then called game, finishing with nine points, four rebounds and two steals.
The Bisons got incredible production from their leaders in the loss.
Emerson Martin scored a career-high 23 points paced by five triples, while
Autumn Agar recorded her second-career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Emily Johnson also had a career-high 14 rebounds, while tallying her third double-double of the year and fourth of her career, after adding 11 points.
"Two tough losses this weekend. I thought we played hard enough to win both games, but a few lapses in execution really costed us late in both games," said Bisons head coach
Michele Sung.
"It was nice to see career stats for players, now we just need to find the consistency on it."
Coming into the rematch, a focus for Manitoba was on limiting impact big and leading Lethbridge scorer Tobore Okome. The Herd did a solid job, with the combination of Agar,
Emily Johnson, Martin and
Emily Mandamin holding her to ten points (after 19 the night before), however she did finish with a double-double adding 11 boards.
The visitors led 24-12 after one, shooting 64 percent in the first ten, but the Herd fought back thanks to Martin and Mandamin.
Martin scored ten points in the first three minutes of the second, while Mandamin added nine in the quarter, as the Herd held Lethbridge to just eight points through the first eight minutes of the second. The Bisons entered halftime up 42-36.
Down by as much as 13 in the third, the Pronghorns went on a run of their own. They cut Manitoba's lead down to as little as two thanks to five straight points from Piper Dobbelsteyn, and they tied it at 57 early in the fourth after a Kameryn Deklerk triple.
Back-to-back Hozalova threes followed by an Okome layup gave the visitors a five-point lead, but Manitoba answered with a triple from captain
Lauren Bartlett, along with a Johnson layup and Martin three for the 70-67 lead.
But Hozalova answered, and Lethbridge – playing zone defence for most of the game – got a key turnover to swing momentum to their side to end things.
Manitoba takes to the road for the final weekend of the first half, facing Trinity Western this weekend.
