MHKY: No. 1 ranked Dinos beat Bisons 5-1

The Bisons remain in a battle for the final playoff spot at 8-16-1 and one point behind the sixth-placed Regina Cougars.

CALGARY – The No. 1 University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team extended their win streak with their 20th straight victory, defeating the Manitoba Bisons 5-1 on Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena. The win clinched first place in Canada West, the first time the Dinos have done so since 1996-97.

The Dinos were out hot, with Riley Stotts tipping the puck into the net off a pass by teammate Colson Gengenbach just four minutes into the first to open the scoring.

Off the pass of Connor Gutenberg, Schoonbaert fired the puck and doubled the lead midway through the first frame.

There was confusion around the Dinos' third goal of the evening and after review, the goal was awarded to Noah King as he ricocheted the puck off the blocker of Manitoba netminder Simon Harkness.

The Bisons' puck stopper was critical in the second period making 14 saves as the Dinos continued their attack.Calgary wouldn't break through until nearly 15 minutes into the period when Gutenberg passed the puck cross-ice for Arjun Atwalto score off a one-timer to bring the Dinos up 4-0.

The back and forth play began to intensify in the third period, going scoreless until Sean Strange of Calgary managed to float the puck over the shoulder of Harkness, extending the Dinos' lead to 5-0 with just under five minutes remaining.

With less than three minutes to go in regulation, the Bisons were running out of time but managed to make the most of their fifth power play when Samuel Stewart chipped the puck up to Hayden Ostir for a breakaway. Ostir faked out Calgary netminder Carl Tetachuk and dumped the puck into the net putting Manitoba on the board.

While the Dinos have wrapped up the regular season crown with a record of 22-3-0, the Bisons remain in a battle for the final playoff spot at 8-16-1 and one point behind the sixth-placed Regina Cougars.
