Thunderbirds Defence Too Much For Bisons As Ubc Earns Weekend Sweep Over Manitoba With Another 3-1 Win In Men’s Hockey

The Bisons fell in another close battle against nationally ranked Thunderbirds

Box Score For the second game in a row the UBC Thunderbirds were led by a strong performance by their goalie en route to a 3-1 win over the Manitoba Bisons at Wayne Fleming Arena on Saturday afternoon.

"We started way better than yesterday so I'm happy about that. It was a great hockey team and I thought we played pretty well," said Bisons head coach Gordon Burnett after the game.

"The more we drive the net the better chance we have to score. Their last two goals were tough on our goalie. However it ended a 3-1 against a great hockey team so it's hard to be negative about it," Burnett added.

"For us it's about finding a way to get to the other side of these close games, can we find a way to score?" said Burnett about their objective going forward.

It was a stalemate battle in the early going. Both teams remained deadlocked at 0-0 through the entire period.

Both teams continued to jostle back and forth to start the second period. Defence was the name of the game as shots on goal were few and far between.

It wasn't until halfway through the second that UBC finally broke the deadlock. Their offence flooded down the ice in numbers with a two-on-one counterattack that resulted in Scott Atkinson finishing the saucer pan across the face of goal from Cyle McNabb.

Manitoba found the equalizer moments into the final period. Noah Basarab buried a shot past Thunderbirds' goaltender Dorrin Luding.

UBC's offence came right back minutes later when Liam Kindree fired home a wrist shot through a screen into the top corner of the net.

The Thunderbirds put the game on ice when Jack Wismer splashed through enemy lines through another screen to put them up 3-1 with six minutes left.

"We're up against another really good hockey team next weekend in Mount Royal so we're going to have to prepare for that. We have to be patient with our looks and keep our preparation the same each week," Burnett commented on the preview of next week's road game.

The Bisons travel to Calgary to face the Mount Royal Cougars on January 12th at 7:00pm CT.
