After tremendous individual performances,
Samuel Lamont and
Norah Collins are Bison Sports Athletes of the Week.Â
Lamont was the top Bisons finisher at the Stewart Cup in Calgary this past weekend, finishing 22nd overall with a time of 24:47.73 in the 8k race. It's the second straight cross country meet where Lamont has been the top male finisher for the Herd, after a time of 20:20.7 during the Dakota Classic. That result placed Lamont fifth overall.Â
A Winnipeg native, Lamont began his cross country career at UNB, where he finished in the top ten at the AUS Championships during the 2022-23 season. He was also a member of UNB's travel roster.
Lamont's results this year are impressive, considering he hadn't competed in a race in a year and a half after transferring back home. Head coach
Claude Berube describes Lamont as having a "high pain threshold," which has been evident all season. He will be a major factor for Manitoba's Canada West and U SPORTS rosters in a few weeks.Â
On the ice, Collins had four shots, and three points during Manitoba's season-opening split against the Alberta Pandas. All three points, including two goals, came during Sunday's rematch, a 4-2 for the Bisons, their first victory over the U of A since February of 2023.Â
Collins was buzzing around the net all weekend. She nearly scored Manitoba's first goal of the season in Saturday's opener, with her wrist shot in the second period going off the top of the cross bar and out in a close 1-0 win for Alberta.
The following night Collins was on the money. She got her first goal of the season on a wrist shot that sailed into the top left corner of the net on the power play late in the first period. The tally gave Manitoba a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.Â
Collins' second goal came in incredible fashion. She took the puck behind the Herd's net and went end to end, finishing top corner again with a wrist shot that popped the water bottle 35 seconds into the third period to give her side a 4-2 lead. It was the first two-goal game in Collins' university career.Â
Collins added an assist on Manitoba's third goal. She once again went end to end, dishing the puck to Camryn Gills at the left point. Her shot was deflected in by
Kelsey Huibers for her first U SPORTS goal.Â
