'The Bisons are on the rise'

Manitoba sent nine student-athletes to the Canada West Cross Country Championship over the weekend, the most in six years.

CAMROSE -- The Bisons cross country team sent a combined nine student-athletes to Camrose, Alberta for the Canada West Cross Country Championships over the weekend. That's the most for the program since 2018. Click here for full results.

Individually, Minnesota State Champion Hayes McMillan earned All-Rookie honours on the men's side. It's the second year in a row a Bisons male athlete has made the All-Rookie team, after Carson Kroeker last year. McMillan was also the fastest athlete for the Herd, finishing 21st overall in the 8k race in 26:53, fourth among rookies.

Justin Kroeker, Calvin Reimer, Samuel Lamont, Carson Kroeker, Jonah Leppelmann and Alejandro Civetta also represented the Bisons. Every athlete ran under six minutes per mile, and Manitoba tallied 187 points overall for eighth.

"This is the most fleshed out cross country team we've had in a very long time. I'm really proud to be a part of this team," said Justin.

"This is the culmination of a couple of years of hard work putting this all together. Now we have a full travel team, which is great. This is showing that we're making good progress in re-building our distance program. The Bisons are on the rise."

On the women's side, Angela Kroeker represented Manitoba at the conference championship for a fourth straight year, while 2023 Rookie of the Year Lena Klassen  returned for a second straight season.

Klassen finished 31st in the 8k, at 32:30, while her training partner Kroeker finished 33rd in 33:01.

"It's an awesome thing to have, to be able to be that close in training and also in racing," Klassen said of Kroeker.

"It's definitely useful when I'm not sure what the competition elsewhere is going to look like, having someone to rely on. She mentored me last year and she still continues to do that.

Next up is the U SPORTS Championship on November 9 hosted by UBCO.
