(Winnipeg, MB) - The Manitoba Bisons erased a three-goal deficit in the third period, only to see the Regina Cougars score a minute later, as the visitors held on for a 6-4 win against Manitoba on the road. The Bisons fell to 1-3-0, but did have 14 different players record a point over the weekend set, while the Cougars improved to 1-5-0.
Â
Manitoba faced a 1-0 deficit early in the game as a seemingly harmless puck being chipped off the board turned into an odd-man rush in
favour of Regina. With
Paycen Bjorklund open for a pass, Turner McMillen opted to instead snipe the puck just past
Braden Holt's shoulder, putting the Cougars up early in the game.
Regina's puck movement eventually led to a second goal, as McMillen got open on the wing to add an insurance marker with 8:13 to go in the first.
Manitoba added lots of pressure in the second, including extended offensive zone time on multiple occasions.
Â
Hayden Ostir showed his two-way
skillset by consistently denying clearing attempts, and he also had a couple of attempted shots which Regina blocked.
The Herd balanced play in the second, and goaltender
Braden Holt made a great pad stop to deny Regina early in the frame.
Â
Holt's stop gave momentum to his side, and the Bisons capitalized with 9:49 to go in the second.
Riley Zimmerman picked up the puck from behind the net and found
Andre Sutter rushing the offensive zone with
Codey Behun. Sutter would carry the puck into the zone finding
Behun free of defenders, ripping the puck clean over Adam Evanoff's shoulder to make it a 2-1 game.
Regina would answer back quickly as Carter Belitski found Eric Houk with speed skating into the slot to beat Holt just below the glove to restore Regina's two-goal lead. Later, Manitoba would get caught on a three-on-two rush where tic-tac-toe play from
Kade Runke to Carson Whyte and then to the goalscorer Jakob Brook unfolded.
Â
Down three entering the third, the hosts put their foot on the gas.
In a wild turn of events, Regina hit the post on an open net, and the play would turn the other way shorthanded.
Codey Behun would get the first shot on the net, which left the rebound open for
Evan Toth. Toth capitalized on the loose puck to bury his first goal of the season, and the shorthanded marker of the weekend for Manitoba to make it 4-2.
Just over two minutes later,
Brandon Casey would fire a puck on net from the point and a rebound opportunity was tapped in by
Skyler Bruce to cut Regina's lead to just one goal with 13 minutes to play.
A complete shift in momentum was noticeable in the Wayne Fleming Arena as the Bisons looked like a whole new team after these two goals.
A costly high-sticking penalty to Regina's Christian Riemer led to Manitoba's fourth power play goal of the season, tying the game up with eight minutes to play.
Manitoba played the perimeter to move the puck and once they caught Regina's defenders playing out of position, with three attackers swarming the net. Ultimately Eric Alairie put the puck in the back of the net to tie the game at four.
Manitoba's rally wouldn't last long as Regina scored the go-ahead goal on a delayed penalty with under six minutes left to play in the third period.
Â
Kade Runke was tripped up behind the play, but Regina would rush Manitoba's zone and it was Jakob Brook feeding Carson Whyte for the goal.
The insurance marker was fed on the empty net goal as
Braden Holt was pulled with 75 seconds remaining in the game.
The Bisons hit the road to face the
MacEwan Griffins next weekend.
