WHKY: Bisons Shut Out Griffins 2-0 in Pink in the Rink Game to Sweep Weekend Series

Goaltender Paige Fischer made 16 saves for her first U SPORTS shutout.

(Winnipeg, MB) - Louise Fergusson notched two points, including her first U SPORTS goal and first multi-point game in a U SPORTS contest in Manitoba's 2-0 win over the MacEwan Griffins. Aimee Patrick scored the insurance marker in the third period while goaltender Paige Fischer made 16 saves for her first U SPORTS shutout. The Bisons improved to 3-2-1 while the Griffins fell to 1-4-1.

"I thought today we played a full game and for each other," said Bisons interim head coach Jordyn Zacharias.

"There was no individual play today and that's when we have a lot of success. We gave our goalie everything we could have and she played unreal, so we're just happy to just come up with the win."

Manitoba would start the period with a lot of rushes on net, including one great solo effort from Dana Goertzen who fought off three Griffins defenders but was knocked off the puck by a fourth.

Later in the game, Manitoba would find themselves on the power play and capitalized to make it 1-0.

Goertzen drove the net, freeing herself from defenders and got a shot off which was blocked by a MacEwan defender. The Griffins were unable to get fresh legs on the ice and Manitoba took advantage immediately. Patrick would fire the puck to Fergusson, who sent the puck into heavy traffic just in front of the net. Fergusson's shot would hit the skates of a MacEwan defender and redirect into the net to put the Herd up 1-0.

Goertzen would continue to have a strong game as she drove the net and created yet another high-danger scoring chance. Although the second period remained scoreless, Manitoba's line of Goertzen, Kylie Lesuk and Kelsey Huibers kept driving play and creating constant offensive zone rushes that MacEwan's defenders kept getting caught in.

Manitoba's best scoring chance of the second period came on their second power play of the game. Ali Staples led the rush into the offensive zone as Camille Enns got a great shot off from the point which no Bison attacker was able to grab the rebound on. On the following play, Staples got the initial shot off on the play while Hanna Bailey grabbed the loose puck and jammed another shot on net.

The Herd's significant push was turned aside by MacEwan's netminder, Brianna Sank, who stood on her head during the Bisons' high-flying, fast-paced play style.

Manitoba would add the insurance marker on their third power-play of the game. Goertzen would battle hard to keep the play in the Griffins zone and it finally paid off. Fergusson would pick up the pass right on the tape and feed it right in front of the net where Patrick would tap it in right on the doorstep of the Griffins net.

Today's Pink the Rink game also served as the kick-off for the team's fundraiser in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. Click here to donate to the cause.

The Bisons hit the road to face the Saskatchewan Huskies next weekend.
