Trailblazing kicker
Maya Turner achieved another incredible accomplishment on Monday, becoming the first female in U SPORTS history to be named a Canada West All-Star.
The Herd's kicker was consistent all season long, going 12-for-16 overall on field goal attempts, while her field goal percentage of 75 led Canada West and was tenth in U SPORTS.
Turner has 21 regular season field goals a Bison, the seventh most in school history, and she's the first player since Scott Dixon from 2007-08 to hit on at least 75 percent of her field goals in back-to-back seasons (79 in 2023, third-best percentage in program history).
Turner's 48-yard field goal against Saskatchewan in week six was the eighth-longest of any kicker in the nation, and tied her career high from the season prior.
"We knew that
Maya Turner was a very good kicker from the first time we saw her film. We saw her as an athlete, a kicker, not 'a girl who could kick.' She has earned her position as a starter and she's earned the respect of her teammates and opponents," said head coach
Brian Dobie.
"Her All-Star selection is further validation of the excellent football player that she has become."
"I'm so honoured to be selected along with these other great players in our conference," added Turner, a Minnesota native, who began her university career as a soccer player at Loyola University Chicaho before shifting to the gridiron in 2022.
"I owe it to our special teams unit and the team overall for setting me up for success."
