WHKY: Sasktchewan Edges Manitoba 5-3 In Women’s Hockey

The Huskies overcame a 2-0 deficit with four straight goals. Both teams will start their post-season journeys this coming weekend.

Box Score Four straight unanswered goals helped Saskatchewan overcome an early 2-0 deficit as they beat Manitoba 5-3 in women's hockey on Saturday afternoon at Wayne Fleming Arena.

It was seniors night for six graduating Bison players, forwards Samantha Sichkaruk, Kate Gregoire, Molly Kunnas and Sarah Dennehy, defeneman Kaitlyn Chatyrbok, and goalie Meagan Relf

"It's been a great five years with all the memories and friendships we've had, I wouldn't change it for the world," said Gregoire who found her name on the score sheet for the second game in a row at home. "We played good but weren't able to get the puck in the net and that happens. We're coming back hard for playoffs though."

"They definitely wanted to do it for their leaders and seniors. We played a good game but sometimes those penalty troubles interrupt the flow of the game," head coach Jordyn Zacharias said.

"However it's good for them to play in those different situations such as penalty kill, six on five and we even got a power play goal which is good prep for next weekend."

The Bisons will now face the third ranked Mount Royal Cougars in the first round of the Canada West playoffs this coming weekend on the road.

"My message to the girls is for them to stay connected with each other. We came into this week with some new line combinations and you can see then starting to connect, share the puck and read off each other," Zacharias stated about their prep for the Cougars.

"When we play like that and move the puck quickly we play a good game so we can continue that into next week."

Senior night was off to a rocking start. The Bisons had a little deja vu as graduating forward Dennehy setup fellow senior Gregoire who poked in the puck with time winding down on the power play following a Brenna Nicol attempt. It's the second night in a row that Gregoire and Dennehy connected for a goal.

But the fun didn't stop there. Barely a minute later Dana Goertzen broke free from the pack and found herself one on one with the Huskies goalie. Cool as you like she blasted a forehand shot home to double the Herd's lead in a flash.

The Huskies weren't beaten down by this deficit and got quickly back to work. Kate Ball tapped in a deflected shot to cut the lead in half no more than two minutes after Saskatchewan fell two down.

Goertzen had another chance late in the first to expand the Bison lead but Huskies goalie Colby Wilson made a tremendous save.

Saskatchewan then turned the game quickly on its head. Kahlen Wisener corralled a loose puck and slid the biscuit into the bottom corner of the goal to tie the game at 2-2.

Early in the second the Huskies took advantage of an unguarded puck when Meagen Relf left it for her teammate. Kennedy Brown swiped it away quickly before tucking it nearside into the net. It was Saskatchewan's third straight goal unanswered after having gone down 2-0 early in the game.

Kara Kondrat added to Saskatchewan's cushion when she splashed through enemy lines on the power play to give the Huskies a 4-2 lead.

The Bisons finally responded late in the third when Jena Barscello hammered in a shot from close range to cut the deficit to one.

Manitoba almost found the equalizer with just over a minute to play but Goertzen rattled it off the crossbar and out.

Mallory Dyer iced the game with under a minute left with the empty netter.
