WINNIPEG -- A third period Kade McMillen goal was the difference on Friday night in Winnipeg, as the Trinity Western Spartans battled back from multiple one-goal deficits and eventually overcame the Manitoba Bisons 6-3. The win gives TWU seven points on the season, while snapping a ten-game losing streak.
Â
Forward
Riley Stotts scored two goals in the loss, and now leads Manitoba with 18 points.
Â
The action started right out of the gate, with both teams trading goals within the first two minutes.
Â
Manitoba was first to capitalize, as
Josh Paulhus forced a turnover and got the puck to Stotts. He expertly placed the puck in the top corner for his fourth goal of the season.
Â
Just a minute later, the Spartans would equalize through a chance gifted to them by Manitoba.
Forward Aidan Steinke picked off a pass by the Manitoban defender at the point, leaving no chance for Bisons netminder
Braden Holt.
Â
The action was not done this period, as the Bisons found the back of the net yet again.
Â
After a wicked move by
Hayden Ostir to keep the puck in the zone, Ostir came back into the play and made a quick pass to
Jackson Arpin who excellently shelved the puck over the Spartan's goalie for a 2-1 lead.
Â
Trinity Western came out strong in the second period, but lacked results on the scoresheet to start. Holt frustrated the Spartans throughout the period, making an impressive one-on-one save against Luke Spadafora to keep the Bisons ahead.
Â
However, the Spartans would have their efforts materialize in the last quarter of the period. Despite Holt's efforts in making two point-blank saves for his team, the puck would trickle out to the front of the net, resulting in Forward Christian Lowe tapping it in to level the score at two.
Â
But Manitoba would not be without their chances. A pass down the line found forward
Skyler Bruce, who used his speed to get one on one with goaltender Leon Sommer, but was unable to beat the Spartans netminder.
Â
Sommer would continue to put on a show for the rest of the period.
Â
The most emphatic chance occurred in the last ten seconds of the period, as
Eric Alarie found the puck on his tape just inches from the net. Still, he was unable to beat Sommer, who reached with his legs to block the save.
Â
The third period began promisingly for Manitoba, with the Bisons taking the lead once more in the first minute.Â
Â
Forwards
Skyler Bruce and
Jonny Hooker put on a show, making a series of impressive give-and-go passes, as Bruce laid it on a platter for Stotts to put home his second of the game.
Â
Despite the Bisons efforts, Trinity Western's resolve would strengthen throughout the third, becoming more and more determined to find an equalizer.
Â
An equalizer would come with seven minutes left to play, as a blocked puck would bounce to the Spartans. After a quick switch of play, the puck would find Defencemen Jesse Pomeroy who slotted it just over Holt's shoulder to tie the game at three.
Â
Nearing the end of the third period, the Bisons were forced to the penalty kill.
Â
The Spartans would not waste their chance to capitalize, and as the final seconds of the power play expired, Kade McMillen would put the game winning goal past the stretching Holt.
Â
Two empty netters within the final minute of play would put the Bison's hope of a point out of reach.
Â
The Bisons look to bounce back against the Spartans tomorrow at 2:00 pm CST.
