Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Zachary Nolan

Herd's comeback falls short against Dinos 5-4

Adam Kydd’s late goal in the third helped Calgary to a win over the hosts. Manitoba scored three in the third but fall by one.

Manitoba battled back from 4-1 down in the third period to tie their game against Calgary, but couldn't complete a thrilling comeback, falling by one in a game that saw 69 combined shots. Adam Kydd scored the game-winner with just under three minutes left.

The Bisons dropped to 2-2 on the season while the Dinos improved to 5-1.

"It's tough to say in a loss but I really liked what we did, our offence came alive later in the game, but we did some good things throughout the game that I really liked. I thought the way we matched up against a good team like Calgary was really good, I just think we need to work on capitalizing on our chances and limiting some of theirs," said Bisons head coach Gordon Burnett.

The Bisons began the first period with a level of calmness they lacked the prior day. They regularly drove into the attacking zone however shots on net were harder to come by.

Five minutes into the game Braden Holt was tested on a deflection in close but he handled it cleanly not allowing a rebound. His counterpart in the Calgary net, Carl Tetachuk showed calmness of his own saving a Skyler Bruce deflection in tight to keep the game scoreless.

The Dinos found the icebreaker in this game by creating chaos in the Herd's zone at 8:16. After a dangerous cross crease pass was stopped by Holt, the rebound squirted free. With the Bisons running around in their own zone Connor Horning corralled the puck inside the left circle, spun and fired it under the sprawling arms of Holt for his second goal of the season and of the weekend to make the score 1-0 Calgary.

"Horns a guy that does so much for us in the defensive zone blocking shots, just great penalty killer. To see him be able to put a few in the net it just gets everyone going, we're all super happy for him," said Kydd on Horning's two goal weekend.

With 6:28 left in the first period the Bisons would earn a powerplay after Logan Hauer delivered a hard knee to Bruce in neutral ice. The Bisons looked comfortable on this powerplay but couldn't find a clear lane to the net with Tetachuk handling most pucks into his chest.

Despite not scoring on the powerplay, the Bison's forecheck brought more action into the Dinos zone. With 3:20 left, Mike King wired a shot into the leg of a Dinos defender, and the rebound wound up on Mitchell Joss's stick, but he too was blocked by the Dinos.

The period ended with Bruce going off for hooking with 8.5 seconds left and the penalty kill carried over into the second. The shot count was 11-10 for the Bisons after one.

The Dinos didn't convert on their powerplay but gained momentum and doubled the lead under three minutes into the period. A solid zone entry from the Dinos ended with Jacksenn Hungle feathering a pass over to Davis Fry in the slot, who wired a slapshot that just snuck under the pads of Holt to make it 2-0 Dinos.

If the second period had a theme, scrums were that theme. Throughout the period there were scrums around the Dino's net as well as the Bison's and it would lead to them getting on the board in the second. At 16:25, an innocent looking shot from the perimeter by the Bisons resulted in six bodies in the crease and the official pointed at center ice for a penalty shot as it was deemed the Dinos illegally covered the puck in the crease.

The Bisons elected Lucas Brennan to take the shot. He swung out to his left, slowly creeped back towards the middle of the ice and ripped a quick wrister past the glove side of Tetachuk to make it 2-1 Dinos for his first of the season.

"We had a shootout earlier in the year, we thought he did a good job and so for us there was no question in my mind who was going to take it," said Burnett

Both the Dinos and the Bisons would have opportunities to capitalize throughout the midway mark of the second but both goaltenders stood tall. Tetachuk handled an open ice shot from Ben Bonni with the blocker from the ringette line at 11:00. Holt seemed to always be under pressure in the crease from the Dinos, making four saves in a row off Matt Corbet on a scrum at 8:39.

The Dino's pressure paid off as it would force two defensive zone penalties from the Herd late in the second.

Luke Brenton was taken off for roughing with just over a minute left and Sam Borschowa after saving a goal in the crease accidentally sent the puck out of play for delay of game to make it a two-man advantage for the Dinos with 10 seconds left in the period. The Dinos didn't let up and just four seconds later regained their two-goal lead thanks to a rocket of a shot from Sean Strange at the point.

The period ended 3-1 Dinos on the scoreboard and they held the shot count lead through two periods 29-22.

The penalty kill woes continued for the Bisons early in the third. On the overlapping powerplay from the second, Mack Stewart's shot through traffic bounced off Holt's pad to the stick of Hauer and he made no mistake potting it into the net to make it 4-1 Dinos under two minutes into the third.

"Special teams are a big part of this league and we're going to have to be better on the penalty kill," said Burnett on the Dinos going 2/4 on the powerplay against the Bisons.

At 16:21 the Bisons got a powerplay opportunity of their own as Corbet was called for charging. At 15:12, Brennan grabbed his second goal of the game on the ensuing powerplay when Eric Alarie found him all alone at the top of the circle and he fired a shot over the glove of Tetachuk to make it 4-2.

The Bisons weren't done and just two minutes later, Bruce found himself with tons of time by the right hashmarks. He waited a second to attract the Calgary attention and slipped a slick pass over to Borschowa who made it 4-3 with 13:16 to go.

Two minutes later, Dylan Anderson of the Dinos was taken off for interference, and the Herd had another opportunity to make them pay.  They didn't score on the powerplay but didn't let up and with 8:57 to go in the third Dawson Pasternak picked up the loose change on a deflected shot on net off Tetachuk and buried it for the equalizer 4-4.

"You're trying to be calm but obviously everyone's a little bit frustrated when you give up a few there. You try to stay calm and positive and as an older guy, I try to stay calm but hold guys accountable at the same time. You won't rip guys a part but you'll dig deep," said Kydd on the feeling of the Dino's bench after the 4-4 goal.

The game would become quite uncomfortable for both teams, but the Dinos found the dagger. With under three minutes left in the period Anderson's shot on net would find its way to Kydd all alone in front. He faked to his left cut to his right and gave the Dinos the lead late in the third period.

"It was a good shift, Pooler and Stew working hard down low, couple nice plays by the defence there. We worked it in the zone a little bit, managed to get the shot on, I think we got a tip and rebound out front for me, I had a little bit of space and was able to put it in," said Kydd.

The Bisons tried to mount another comeback, but they were denied as the Dinos hung on to win 5-4. The final shot count was 39-30 for the Dinos.

"We have a good team in MRU coming in next weekend, so we have to take a couple hours to reflect on this then we have to try and clean up some things we've done wrong and build on things we've done right," said Burnett.

The Bisons are back in action next weekend against the Mount Royal Cougars.
