WINNIPEG – In a game of runs that saw both sides hold momentum, it was the No. 4 nationally ranked Calgary Dinos who emerged victorious, 76-54 to improve to 10-0. Manitoba fell to 1-8.
Â
Calgary forced 19 steals in the victory, going on a 20-point run in the first, and eight-point run in the third. Kourtney Oss finished with a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds.
Â
Manitoba opened the game with a 12-point surge of their own, and showed flashes of brilliance for a second night in a row against first place Calgary.
Paige Schatkowsky led the way with 15 points, and the Bisons won the rebounding battle 47-36, led by eight from
Taylor Schepp and
Samantha Onyebuchi.
Â
The first quarter consisted of two enormous runs. Manitoba scored the first 12 points of the game, out-rebounding Calgary 7-1 in the first four minutes of the contest, with Schatkowsky and
Kyu Fust combining for Manitoba's first nine points.
Â
Ayva Khan added three rebounds, and found
Darya Rom for a corner three to complete the 12-0 burst for the hosts.
Â
Calgary got back into the game from the free throw line. They scored eight points from the charity stripe, and six players hit the score sheet overall in a 20-0 run over the final five and a half minutes.
Â
Oss subbed into the game during that span and was critical to the visitor's success. She scooped up five rebounds, had five points, including Calgary's first bucket, and hit three free throws. Amelie Collin added five points including a trey.
Â
After a back and forth seven minutes of the second where the two sides combined for 24 points, it was the hosts who took momentum into the break.
Â
Manitoba went on a 7-0 run to close the quarter, with five of those points coming from Schatkowsky. She had a rebound and put back, and a triple, entering the break with a team-leading nine points and five boards.
Â
The Herd's play on the glass was key in the late quarter burst. They had 28 rebounds overall compared to 17 for Calgary, with Onyebuchi contributing five, while Khan and
Anna Miko combined for six.
Â
Much like quarter one, both sides went on notable runs in quarter three.
Â
Down ten at 45-35, Manitoba scored five straight, forcing four turnovers along the way. Miko had two steals and a block during that span, with her second steal leading to a Fust layup. Khan also played tough defence inside, and netted a catch and shoot three during that period of time.
Â
But Calgary closed the final three minutes of the quarter on an 8-0 run. Oss was once again a major factor. She had five rebounds, contributing 11 of Calgary's 25 overall entering the fourth, while tallying four points. Collin added a key steal, assist to Oss and a triple in the quarter, leading all players with 16 points overall.
Â
Calgary recorded six steals in the fourth quarter to complete a 22-point win. Collin and Christine Geraldo had nine combined in the game, combining for 28 points overall.
Manitoba closes their first half schedule against Winnipeg this Friday at home at 6 pm.
