A gritty win for Manitoba as they come back against Regina to win 4-3 in a shootout

A crucial goal from Manitoba's Aimee Patrick in the dying seconds of the game lit up the ‘Flem and sent the game to overtime. Forward Alyssa Rasmuson scored the shootout winner and Emily Shippam made two big saves in the shootout, which gave Manitoba the 4-3 win.

WINNIPEG -- Veteranf forwards Julia Bird and Aimee Patrick helped lead the Bisons to a comeback 4-3 win over the Regina Cougars on Saturday, completing a weekend sweep. The two teams needed a shootout to determine the winner of the contest, with forward Alyssa Rasmuson scoring the shootout winner.

A crucial goal from Patrick in the dying seconds of the game lit up the 'Flem and sent the game to overtime and eventually the shootout.

Bird and Rasmuson both put the puck away in the shootout. Bird scored in round one, and Rasmuson shortly after. Goaltender Emily Shippam made two key stops to lock up the win.

This was Manitoba's third win of the season over the Regina Cougars, and second in a shootout, both coming on home ice. The win put the Herd just three points behind Regina in the standings.

"Obviously, there was a lot of back and forth," said head coach Jordan Colliton. "We were able to take the lead, and I'm proud of our group to be able to bounce back, tie it up again, and then take that extra point."

The first period contained end-to-end action as both teams found the back of the net.

The Cougars were first to break the deadlock, with defenceman Olivia Leggett capitalizing with three seconds left on a power play. After an intense puck battle broke out in front of the Bisons net, the puck bounced to the blue line for Leggett to pick up, and she fired it past Shippam.

Manitoba tied the game under a minute later. Patrick stripped the puck off the Regina defenceman, which left her going one-on-one with Cougars netminder Natalie Williamson. Williamson stopped Patrick's first effort but could do nothing about the second, as she put it home for her 53rd career regular season point.

Regina came out strong to open the second, but Manitoba responded, out-shooting the Cougars 13-5 within the period. Veteran Julia Bird put Manitoba up by one with 1:40 to go, after the Bisons generated chance after chance in the Regina zone. Time and space allowed defenceman Louise Fergusson to throw the puck on net, and Bird tipped the puck past the Regina netminder for her fourth goal of the season.

The third period had three goals to match, as both teams were determined to take points from the game.

The Cougars equalizer came halfway through the period on a counter attack, which left Regina Forwards Kaylee Dyer and Shaylee Scraba alone on goal. Shippam made the stop on Dyer's attempt but Scraba put away the rebound.

Regina took the lead off another two-versus-one chance. Pippy Pritchard squared the puck to Kaitlyn Gilroy who made no mistake, and gave the Cougars a one-goal advantage.

But the Bisons were not done yet. With just 34 seconds on the clock, defenceman Hanna Bailey threw the puck on net from the blue line. After a slight scuffle, the loose puck bounced in front of Patrick, who scored her second of the night.

With little time remaining. The game was taken to overtime. After the five additional five, the contest went to a shootout and Manitoba secured the extra point in three rounds.

You can catch the Bisons at home next Friday against Mount Royal at 7 p.m. CT.
