CALGARY -- Bisons quarterback
Jackson Tachinski has orchestrated seven come-from-behind wins during his tenure at Manitoba, and he nearly had an eighth on Friday night at McMahon Stadium. Trailing 15-8 with 1:39 to play, Tachinski drove the Herd 49 yards in four plays, including a 41-yard dot to
Nathan Udoh, which put the Bisons at the Dinos 12-yard line.Â
On the fifth play of the drive -- third and two -- running back
Breydon Stubbs surged five yards for a touchdown, reaching the end zone on the ground for the 23rd time as a Bison, putting him in a tie for second in school history with 2007 Vanier Cup champion Matt Henry.Â
Instead of going for the tie, the Bisons elected to go for the win. From just past the five yard line, Tachinski delivered a dart to veteran receiver
Braeden Smith -- who had a career-high 58 yards on five grabs in the game. Smith dove and appeared to make a sensational grab by the near pilon, however the pass was ruled incomplete.
Manitoba tried an onside kick on the next play, but it was recovered by Calgary, who held on for the 15-14 win. The Dinos improved to 1-1, and haven't lost two straight road games to Manitoba (0-2) in 23 years.Â
Despite the result, there were plenty of positives for the Bisons.Â
Defensively, Manitoba recorded three sacks, and are tied for first in Canada West, with five overall. Two of the Bisons' three sacks came from captain
Jack Shaffer, a career high. His five tackles were also a career-high, and he added a forced fumble.
The third Manitoba sack came from
Jordan Friesen, who has a career-high two on the season, while
Nic Pereira led the way in tackles again, with seven. His 15 tackles on the year are tied for third in Canada West.Â
In the receiving corps, Udoh and Smith both had career games. The former hauled in three passes for 62 yards total, and is tenth in Canada West, with 109 yards overall.
After two weeks on the road to begin their season, Manitoba returns home this Saturday, hosting the 2-0 Saskatchewan Huskies at 5 pm CT.
