VANCOUVER, B.C. — The University of Manitoba Bisons were unable to complete a weekend sweep of the UBC Thunderbirds, falling 3-0 in Canada West men's hockey action Sunday afternoon at Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
The loss came one day after Manitoba earned a road victory over the Thunderbirds to open the conference season.
UBC opened the scoring late in the first period when Brayden Schuurman beat Bisons goaltender Matthew Kieper at 11:59, with assists from Ty Thorpe and Ben Keon.
The Thunderbirds doubled their lead early in the second period on the power play. Just 10 seconds into a hooking penalty assessed to Brandon Funk, Josh Williams scored at 3:23 off passes from Schuurman and Keaton Dowhaniuk.
Williams added his second goal of the game only 27 seconds into the third period, finishing a play set up by Austin Fraser and Schuurman to make it 3-0.
The Bisons pushed for a response but were unable to solve UBC netminder Cole Schwebius, who turned aside all 16 shots he faced for the shutout.
Kieper made 21 saves on 24 shots in defeat.
Manitoba finished 0-for-3 on the power play, while UBC capitalized once in four opportunities with the man advantage. The Thunderbirds outshot the Bisons 24-16.
Schuurman led the UBC offence with a goal and two assists, while Williams scored twice as the teams split their opening weekend series. The Bisons are back home for their home opener on Friday. Tickets are available now.Â
