WINNIPEG — The University of Manitoba Bisons dropped a 5-0 decision to the UBC Thunderbirds in Canada West women's hockey action Saturday afternoon at Wayne Fleming Arena.
In a rematch of last season's Canada West championship final, UBC struck three times in the opening period and never looked back.
Jaylyn Morris opened the scoring on a power play at 2:25 of the first period, converting a setup from Ilona Markova and Hanna Perrier. UBC added even-strength goals 58 seconds apart late in the frame, with Emma Hall scoring at 17:55 before Payton Henwood made it 3-0 at 18:53.
The Thunderbirds extended their lead midway through the second period when Maggie Rauckman scored on the power play at 12:55, with assists going to Hannah Dods and Perrier.
Kate Chuback rounded out the scoring at 13:28 of the third period as UBC completed a weekend sweep in Winnipeg.
Manitoba generated 21 shots on goal, led by Norah Collins with four and Kelsey Huibers with three, but was unable to solve UBC goaltender Mya Lucifora, who recorded the shutout.
Bisons netminder Cypress Classen made 21 saves on 26 shots in the loss.
Special teams proved pivotal, as UBC went 2-for-4 on the power play while Manitoba finished 0-for-2 with the player advantage. The Thunderbirds outshot the Bisons 26-21 overall.
The Bisons are back in action Friday in Saskatoon when they take on the Huskies. You can catch the action live on Canada West TV.Â
