SASKATOON, Sask. — Rookie forward Addison Greve scored the game-winning goal and
Jenna Goertzen recorded a 15-save shutout as the University of Manitoba Bisons defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies 2-0 on Saturday evening.
Manitoba opened the scoring just 4:24 into the first period on a strong individual effort from Greve. After
Claire Moorman moved the puck along the boards to
Alyssa Rasmuson, Rasmuson backhanded it into open ice to spring the rookie forward. Greve beat a defender through the neutral zone, protected the puck while cutting across the crease and lifted a shot over the goaltender's shoulder to give the Bisons a 1-0 lead.
The Bisons doubled their advantage early in the second period. After
Sadie Keller found
Claire Moorman, Moorman's shot was blocked and dropped into the slot.
Norah Collins pounced on the loose puck and fired a shot to the far side at 5:09 to make it 2-0. Collins, one of Manitoba's key returning offensive threats entering the season, recorded her first goal of the campaign.
Manitoba controlled much of the play throughout the afternoon, outshooting Saskatchewan 25-15.
Sara Harbus paced the Bisons with four shots on goal, while
Dana Goertzen and Keller added three apiece.
The Huskies were given several opportunities to climb back into the game, including four power plays in the third period, but Manitoba's penalty-killing unit held firm. Saskatchewan finished 0-for-5 with the player advantage, while the Bisons went 0-for-6 on the power play.
Goertzen was sharp throughout, stopping five shots in each period as Manitoba secured its first win of the season. At the other end, Clara Juca made 23 saves on 25 shots for Saskatchewan.
The performance continued a strong start for Greve, one of Manitoba's highly regarded newcomers. The rookie provided an early spark with her first Canada West goal, while veteran scorer Collins delivered the insurance marker as the Bisons finished off a complete road effort against the Huskies. The team is back home this Friday and Saturday when they host the Alberta Pandas.
