Bisons shut down Golden Bears to earn road victory in Edmonton

EDMONTON – The Manitoba Bisons leaned on a dominant defensive performance and a strong ground game to earn an 18-3 victory over the Alberta Golden Bears on Friday night, improving to 3-2 on the Canada West season.

Running back Ishe Matanga powered the Bisons offence with 119 rushing yards on 22 carries while adding 38 receiving yards on two catches. Quarterback Cole Anseeuw completed 10 of 17 pass attempts for 142 yards and a touchdown.

The Bisons defence set the tone from the outset, holding Alberta scoreless through the opening half and limiting the Golden Bears' opportunities throughout the game.

After a scoreless first quarter, Manitoba opened the scoring early in the second when Aidan Wiberg took a direct snap from one yard out and plunged into the end zone for a touchdown. The Bisons added two more points later in the quarter when Alberta conceded a safety while pinned deep in its own end.

Manitoba continued to make key plays on the defensive side of the ball. With Alberta threatening for its first points of the night late in the half, Carson Thomas blocked a field goal attempt to preserve a 9-0 advantage heading into the break.

The Golden Bears finally got on the board midway through the third quarter on a 19-yard field goal by Charlie Wiersma, cutting the deficit to six points. Manitoba responded immediately with its most efficient drive of the night, moving quickly down the field before Anseeuw connected with Mikun Odunuga for a touchdown. Alberta stopped the ensuing two-point conversion attempt, but the Bisons had restored a two-possession lead at 15-3.

The defence continued to frustrate Alberta for the remainder of the contest, forcing turnovers and preventing the home side from building any offensive momentum.

Maya Turner added a 46-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to extend Manitoba's lead to 18-3, providing all the insurance the Bisons would need.

Alberta was led offensively by Seth Poelzer, who rushed for 86 yards on 12 carries, while Ayden McDonald recorded a team-high 53 receiving yards.

The Bisons will look to build on the victory as they continue this road trip for the next few weeks. They're up next in Saskatoon in a week one rematch with the Huskies on Friday, Oct. 16. Catch all the action on Canada West TV.
