On the men's side,
Daxx Turner broke a 25-year conference record in the triple jump, with a leap of 15.70m on Saturday afternoon to take gold, while the men's 4x200 relay team set a new school record en route to first.
Turner surpassed the prior best of 16.65m, set by Shawn Peters of Regina in 2001. He did so on his first jump, reaching the same distance on his second, leading throughout the entire competition. Teammate Adebare Agedbosin finished second, with no one managing to pass the jump of 15.34m he put down to open the competition.
Turner's gold medal finish at CanWest capped off the best five-year run by a Bison in the event in school history. The Neepawa native went undefeated in the triple jump at the conference championship, and he'll look to add to his legacy at nationals at home from March 5-7. He also tied his personal best in the high jump, at 2.06m, good for third, and he placed sixth in long jump, helping secure 19 points for the Herd, who finished third as a team with 128 points overall.
Turner was recognized with the Performance of the Meet for his efforts, and was also named Canada West Male Field Athlete of the Year.
"Having been so close to the record two years ago, and keeping my gold streak running all this time, this year the CanWest record was one of my bigger goals for the season," said Turner, ranked first in U SPORTS in the event with a top leap of 16.05m.
"I had a wonky takeoff in long jump on Friday evening, so I had some doubt creep in. But breaking the record on my first attempt gave me such a relief and I could focus on trying to jump a little further. Bigger jumps weren't in the cards, but I couldn't be more grateful to finish off my CanWest career with the record to my name."
Elsewhere on Saturday, the men's 4x200 relay team set a new school standard in the event, surging to a first-place finish in a time of 1:26.78.
Tyrell Davis -- who also won gold in the 60m in 6.67 seconds -- led off for the Herd, who didn't trail at any point.
Davis handed off to
Noah Curtis (who earned his first individual medal a day earlier, bronze in the 300m), who passed the baton to
Augustine Nkundimana. Creating separation, Nkundimana then handed off to
Gavin Moore, who blasted to the finish line well ahead of the competition.
"Overall it was a solid run from the boys. Not much to comment on it, it's just how we've practiced and everything went how we planned and hoped," said coach Gee-ef Nkwonta.
"We just try to do the common things uncommonly well. We've got some things to work on these next couple of weeks, but I'm happy they got this moment. It meant a lot to them."
On the women's side,
Lara Denbow secured another Canada West gold in the high jump as the class of the competition. She eclipsed 1.72m on her first attempt, and was the only individual to pass that height. She then cleared 1.75 and 1.78 on her first try before narrowly missing a school record of 1.81.
Finishing in third was teammate
Nevaeh Marynowski, who reached 1.69m on her second attempt, capping off a stellar showing all weekend. One of the program's most versatile athletes, Marynowski also secured third in the long jump on Friday, and earned an additional point in the 60m hurdles with an eighth-place finish.
Her 13 points were the most of any Bisons female, with the program amassing 39 points overall, including a bronze medal result from their 4x200 relay team.
Other highlights from the championship included a gold-medal from the men's 4x800 relay team on Friday, and
Noah Fillion's silver medal result in the 1500m on Saturday. Fillion secured 18 points individually, running the lead leg in the relay a day before earning his first individual medal at CanWest.
He finished with a time of 3:57.29 in the 1500m, claiming silver in impressive fashion after entering the event ranked 15th in the conference, and not being seeded in the fastest heat. Fillion led from start to finish in his heat, and has auto qualified for nationals due to his top two result.
